How Competitive Is Myanmar's Rice Sector? A Comparison of Production Costs and Efficiency
ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the cost competitiveness of rice production in Myanmar by examining production costs, cost efficiency, and the potential effect of improving cost efficiency on the country's global competitiveness. To achieve this, we conduct a comparative analysis of production costs among major rice‐producing countries and estimate the ...

ABSTRACT EU member states have exhibited varying rates of apple production growth. Technical efficiency (TE) estimation is suitable for identifying best‐practice farm performance. This study examined whether the development of the apple sector in Germany, Italy, and Poland was influenced by production efficiency, access to technology, as well as ...

The synoptic drivers of extreme rainfall in South Africa
A number of studies have shown an increase in the intensity of extreme rainfall over many regions of South Africa during the last 50 to 100 years. However, the weather of a region at any given time is a direct function of the synoptic state of the ...

ABSTRACT This study sets out to investigate the prospects for raising oil palm output in sub‐Saharan Africa, particularly Ghana, without further expansion of cropland. Given global concerns about oil palm's role in deforestation and land use change, the focus is on enhancing productivity on existing farmlands.

Reliability of rainfall kinetic power–intensity relationships
The rainfall erosivity plays a fundamental role in water soil erosion processes and it can be expressed by its kinetic power. At first in this paper, the raindrop-size distributions measured, in the period June 2006–March 2014, by an optical disdrometer ...

The Power of Unity: Collective Action and Smallholder Agricultural Performance in West Africa
ABSTRACT We analyze the impact of collective action through farmer‐based organizations (FBOs) on smallholders' farm performance and income inequality in Ghana, Benin, The Gambia, and Mali. We find that FBO membership increases cereal yield in Ghana and The Gambia, legume yield in Mali, ruminant numbers in Benin and The Gambia, and total farm income in ...

A note on the intensity of rainfall at Madras
The note gives the results of an analysis of the rainfall recorded in fifteen minute periods at Madras from the records of the Casella siphon raingauge during the years 1932 to 1947. There is rain in Madras both during the southwest monsoon from June to September and during the northeast monsoon from October to January.

Rainfall intensity - rainfall kinetic energy relationships: a critical literature appraisal
Knowledge of the relationship between rainfall intensity and kinetic energy and its variations in time and space is important for erosion prediction. However, between studies considerable variations exist in the reported shape and coefficients of this ...

When the River Runs Low: Heterogeneous Impacts of Transportation Disruptions on Local Grain Basis
ABSTRACT A substantial share of U.S. soybean and corn exports from the Midwest moves by barge along the Mississippi River system to export terminals in the Louisiana Gulf. Transportation costs between Midwestern grain elevators and export terminals create a wedge between prices at these locations, and shocks to these costs are partially passed on to ...
