Extreme Rainfall Variability in Australia: Patterns, Drivers, and Predictability* [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2014
Abstract Leading patterns of observed monthly extreme rainfall variability in Australia are examined using an empirical orthogonal teleconnection (EOT) method. Extreme rainfall variability is more closely related to mean rainfall variability during austral summer than in winter.

Compression‐Tension‐Asymmetry and Stiffness Nonlinearity of Collagen‐Matrigel Composite Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Self‐assembled collagen hydrogel matrices are widely used in tissue engineering applications. These matrices stiffen and contract laterally under tension due to fiber alignment and soften and collapse under compression due to fiber buckling. It is demonstrated that filler materials, such as Matrigel, linearize the mechanical behavior of collagen ...

Changing rainfall pattern in Northeast Thailand and implications for cropping systems adaptation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In Northeast Thailand, about 80% of the 20 million inhabitants are engaged in rainfed agriculture. Climate vagaries combined with coarse-textured sandy and unevenly distributed saline soils explain low agriculture yields and the endemic relative poverty ...

Optimal irrigation water allocation using a genetic algorithm under various weather conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Growing water scarcity, due to growing populations and varying natural conditions, puts pressure on irrigation systems, which often are the main consumptive water users.

Shapeshifting Liquid Metal Droplets for Soft Fluidic Machines

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study presented a liquid metal shape shifting strategy which harnesses Lorentz force, surface tension and fluid instabilities to achieve autonomous fluidic power. By using a liquid metal droplet as a mobile current carrier, this strategy enables the development of low‐voltage, self‐oscillating pumps that outperform existing soft pumps.

Investigate the impacts of assimilating satellite rainfall estimates on rainstorm forecast over southwest United States [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Using the MM5-4DVAR system, a monsoon rainstorm case over southern Arizona (5-6 August 2002) was investigated for the influence of assimilating satellite rainfall estimates on precipitation forecasts.

Rainfall pattern effects on crusting, infiltration and erodibility in some South African soils with various texture and mineralogy

open access: yes, 2014
Rainfall characteristics affect crust formation, infiltration rate and erosion depending on intrinsic soil properties such as texture and mineralogy.

A Soft Microrobot for Single‐Cell Transport, Spheroid Assembly, and Dual‐Mode Drug Screening

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A soft, untethered hydrogel microrobot enables precise single‐cell delivery, self‐assembly into 3D spheroids, and real‐time thermal actuation. Driven by light‐induced convection and embedded with gold nanorods and temperature sensors, the microrobot guides cells, modulates local microenvironments, and supports drug testing.
