The variability of rainfall acidity
Canadian Journal of Statistics, 1983AbstractTwo years of rainfall acidity data for the eastern United States were analyzed. The data consist of rainfall‐event pH measurements from a nine station monitoring network. A spatio‐temporal stochastic model, including deterministic components for seasonal variation and rainfall washout, and stochastic components for spatial, temporal, and ...

Storm rainfall variability over Connecticut
Journal of Geophysical Research, 1972Storm rainfall variability over Connecticut was investigated by using data from the 66 cooperative rain gages of the National Weather Service supplemented by 70 volunteer stations. The analyses concentrated on large-scale stratiform type rainstorms. Much of the observed rainfall variability within storms can best be explained by variations in terrain ...

Rainfall Variability in Africa
Monthly Weather Review, 1979Abstract Time series of annual rainfall for 69 stations in Africa were analyzed for trends and periodicities. Trend analysis showed that most of the annual series indicate some forms of oscillations rather than any particular trend. Use of binomial coefficients to smooth the series indicated positive or negative trends in recent years in 20 series, but

A Peculiarity in Rainfall Variability
Nature, 1941A SOMEWHAT perplexing and highly interesting peculiarity in the regimen of rainfall variation is this: all over the world, there is a much greater degree of uniformity in the relative variability of annual rainfall expressed as a percentage of the normal than in the absolute variability expressed as the actual deviation from the normal in inches or ...

Rainfall fluctuations and sunspot variability
Archives for Meteorology, Geophysics, and Bioclimatology Series B, 1982Mean monthly values of sunspot relative numbers and 290 precipitation records are investigated and compared by means of power-spectrum, numerical band-pass filter and cross-spectrum analysis. Spectral-analysis of variance and numerical bandpass filtering indicate significant cyclical variance components in the time scale of solar activity at some ...

Uganda rainfall variability and prediction
Theoretical and Applied Climatology, 2017This study analyzes large-scale controls on Uganda’s rainfall. Unlike past work, here, a May–October season is used because of the year-round nature of agricultural production, vegetation sensitivity to rainfall, and disease transmission. The Uganda rainfall record exhibits steady oscillations of ∼3 and 6 years over 1950–2013.

Mechanisms of Eastern Mediterranean Rainfall Variability
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2000Abstract This paper presents a simple theory for the association between observed eastern Mediterranean (EM) rainfall anomalies and North Atlantic (NA) climate variability. Large-scale NA atmospheric mass rearrangements, primarily a modulation of the Icelandic low and the subtropical high pressure systems, tend to extend beyond the NA.

Thermodynamics of Eastern Mediterranean Rainfall Variability
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2001Abstract This note focuses on thermodynamic changes caused by Eastern Mediterranean (EM) subsidence anomalies. Subsidence anomalies are shown to modulate EM-wide stability with respect to moist ascent. Additionally, convective available potential energy (CAPE) generation rates, as well as mean CAPE, change coherently during extreme EM rainfall ...
