In search of regularities in extreme rainstorms
Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 1990Extreme rainstorms play an important role in the hydrologic design and operation of water resource systems. Due to the lack of complete knowledge of the complex meteorological mechanisms that produce and sustain extreme storms, statistical and correlation analyses are a valuable and complementary tool in identifying regularities of extreme rainfall ...

Venezuelan Rainstorms as Seen by Radar
Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1973Abstract The underlying premise of the research is that a contribution can be made to understanding the interrelation between mesoscale cumulonimbus systems and synoptic disturbances as well as the general circulation by following individual cloud histories in detail.

Abstract On 16–17 August 1959, a severe rainstorm in which amounts exceeded 10 inches in 16 hours occurred in southern Illinois and bordering states. A dense raingage network was located on the major axis of this storm, and one of the heaviest rainfall centers along the axis was enclosed by the network.

Studies of Severe Rainstorms in Illinois
Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1962Data from concentrated rain-gage networks were used to investigate area-depth relationships for basins with areas ranging from 5 sq mi to 500 sq mi; empirical mathematical formulas were developed to define storm duration; field surveys were conducted after major flood producing storms and these data were used in conjunction with radar observations and ...

Frontal Focusing of a Flooding Rainstorm
Monthly Weather Review, 2000Abstract A heavy rainstorm over Kentucky, producing extensive flooding, was concentrated in a narrow band oriented nearly zonally just south of the Ohio River. Analysis of routine surface observations showed that an intense quasi-stationary surface front formed during the 24-h period of heaviest rainfall. This front was parallel to the rainband and was
