Reappraisal is less effective than distraction in downregulation of neural responses to physical threats—An event‐related potential investigation

open access: yesPsychophysiology, Volume 60, Issue 9, September 2023., 2023
Abstract Evolutionary threats (ETs), such as predatory animals and heights, elicit stronger fear responses and are more often the subject of specific phobias, as compared to modern threats (MTs, such as guns and motorcycles). Since processing of ET depends on lower‐order, phylogenetically conserved neural fear circuits, it may be less susceptible to ...

Anxiety attenuates learning advantages conferred by statistical stability and induces loss of volatility‐attuning in brain activity

open access: yesHuman Brain Mapping, Volume 44, Issue 6, Page 2557-2571, April 15, 2023., 2023
To determine how anxious individuals learn during stable and volatile environments, we used an auditory oddball reversal paradigm combined with threat‐of‐shock during fMRI scanning. We found that threat eliminates the behavioural learning advantages of stable over volatile environments.

Acute stress alters probabilistic reversal learning in healthy male adults

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 57, Issue 5, Page 824-839, March 2023., 2023
In this study, we investigated the effect of acute psychosocial stress on flexible behavioural adaptation using a reversal learning task during fMRI scanning and after a Trier Social Stress Test in 28 healthy male participants. We found a small improving effect on task performance accuracy, which was best explained by Rescorla–Wagner double updating in

Forest disturbance and growth processes are reflected in the geographical distribution of large canopy gaps across the Brazilian Amazon

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 110, Issue 12, Page 2971-2983, December 2022., 2022
The proportion of large gaps in the forest canopy varied substantially over the Brazilian Amazon. We have shown that the trends can be explained by geographical variation in disturbance and growth. The frequency of extreme weather events is predicted to increase under climate change, and changes could lead to greater forest disturbance, which should be

mRNA vaccines in the prevention and treatment of diseases

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 3, Issue 3, September 2022., 2022
Mechanisms of mRNA vaccines for infectious diseases and cancers. mRNA molecules encoding tumor antigens are injected into body (either with or without delivery vehicles). The mRNA molecules are taken up and translated into protein antigens by antigen‐presenting cells (APCs).

Developing a CRISPR‐assisted base‐editing system for genome engineering of Pseudomonas chlororaphis

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 15, Issue 9, Page 2324-2336, September 2022., 2022
In this study, we established a CRISPR‐assisted base‐editing (CBE) system for Pseudomonas chlororaphis. This CBE system converts C:G into T:A without DNA strands breaks or any donor DNA template. By engineering a premature STOPcodon in target spacers, the hmgA and phzO genes ofP. chlororaphis were successfully interrupted with high efficiency.

Online digital archive of aerial photographs (1935–1941) of Ethiopia

open access: yesGeoscience Data Journal, Volume 9, Issue 1, Page 3-36, June 2022., 2022
The archive of aerial photographs (right), dating 1935–1941 and covering parts of north and central of Ethiopia, was originally acquired by Italian military forces. To make the archive accessible, it has been scanned and georeferenced (left). This data set of aerial photographs of Ethiopia in the 1930s has been availed to the wider scientific community

The importance of retaining physical functions to prevent skeletal‐related events in multiple myeloma patients with bone disease

open access: yeseJHaem, Volume 3, Issue 2, Page 480-483, May 2022., 2022
Abstract This study was undertaken to identify baseline conditions and triggering factors for skeletal‐related events (SRE) in multiple myeloma (MM) patients treated with denosumab. During the median follow‐up of 17 months, SRE occurred in 6 out of 52 newly diagnosed patients and in 5 out of 23 relapsed/refractory patients.
