Commercial catches, reproduction and feeding habits of Raja asterias (Chondrichthyes: Rajidae) in a coastal area of the Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy, northern Mediterranean) [PDF]

open access: yesActa Adriatica, 2007
A total of 52 “rapido” (towed toothed beam gears) trawls were monitored in late winter-summer of the 1999-2000 period to assess the R. asterias size structure at this time of higher yields as well as 36 fishing operations performed by “volantina” (trawl ...

Mitigating the effect of by‐catch on endangered marine life

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, Volume 28, Issue 2, Page 172-184, April 2025.
Fishing gears cause substantial impacts on the oceans and their ecosystems, and many marine animals, such as sea turtles, marine mammals, seabirds and elasmobranchs, end up as by ‐catch. In this paper, the most effective mitigation measures were investigated for each group, taking into account the fishing gear with which they interact most.

Morphological study of the oviductal gland in the smallnose fanskate Sympterygia bonapartii (Müller and Henle, 1841) (Chondrichthyes, Rajidae) Estudo morfológico da glândula oviductal no smallnose fanskate Sympterygia bonapartii (Müller and henle, 1841) (Chondrichthyes, Rajidae)

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2010
The oviductal gland is an exclusive structure of cartilaginous fishes that produces the egg jelly, forms the tertiary egg envelopes and stores sperm.

Morphological description of Dipturus mennii (Chondrichthyes: Elasmobranchii: Rajidae) and its differentiation from Dipturus trachyderma

open access: yesZoologia (Curitiba), 2011
Squamation patterns and skeletal anatomy (neurocranium, visceral arches, synarcual cartilage, scapulocoracoid, puboischiadic bar, and mixopterigium) of Dipturus mennii Gomes & Paragó, 2001 are described as a contribution to our limited knowledge of the ...

Length-weight relationship of marine fish species off Sao Sebastiao system, Sao Paulo, Southeastern Brazil [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The parameters a and b of the length-weight relationship of the form W = a . L super(b) were estimated for 57 fish species sampled in Sao Sebastiao Channel and shelf system in 1997, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The b values ranged from 2.746 to 3.617.

Design and Validation of an Open–Close Device for Integrated Environmental DNA Sampling Detects A Depth Gradient in Indian Ocean Deep‐Sea Fish Assemblages

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 2, February 2025.
The goal of this study was to leverage existing survey technology to design and test an eDNA sampler that captures an integrated eDNA sample over the length of a deep‐water transect. We provide a biological interpretation of the resulting data, demonstrating the usefulness of such technology to understand the ocean environments, using fish species as ...

Abnormal hermaphroditism in the multispine skate Bathyraja multispinis (Chondrichthyes, Rajidae)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, 2007
A hermaphroditic individual of the multispine skate, Bathyraja multispinis, caught on the Argentinean continental shelf, is described. This is the first record of hermaphroditism in the genus Bathyraja and one of the very few hermaphroditic specimens reported in the Rajidae.

Identifying Spatial Patterns of Egg Nursery Habitat for a Demersal Shark in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea: Conservation and Management Implications

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 31, Issue 2, February 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Oviparous elasmobranchs lay benthic eggs with long incubation periods, many of which also require habitat‐forming sessile organisms for their development. However, they are threatened by bottom‐trawling fishing impacts. Here, we aimed to identify the suitable habitat distribution of small‐spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) egg ...
