Different strategies to achieve Pb-tolerance by the two Trebouxia algae coexisting in the lichen Ramalina farinacea [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Plant Physiology, 2012
Lichen thalli are permeable to airborne substances, including heavy metals, which are harmful to cell metabolism. Ramalina farinacea shows a moderate tolerance to Pb. This lichen comprises two Trebouxia phycobionts, provisionally referred to as TR1 and TR9, with distinct physiological responses to acute oxidative stress.

Lichens and lichenicolous fungi of the “Wrzosowisko Sowno” nature reserve (NW Poland)

open access: yesActa Biologica, 2017
Lichens of the “Wrzosowisko Sowno” nature reserve in the western part of Polish Pomerania were studied in 2006 and 2014. Within the examined area, 90 species of lichens were observed.

Lichens in the nests of European starling Sturnus vulgaris serve a mate attraction rather than insecticidal function [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The European starling Sturnus vulgaris is a hole-nesting bird in which the male builds a voluminous nest using a wide variety of materials such as twigs, grass, leaves, feathers, and lichens.

The genetic structure of the cosmopolitan three-partner lichenRamalina farinaceaevidences the concerted diversification of symbionts [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Ecology, 2012
The epiphytic lichen Ramalina farinacea is distributed throughout the northern hemisphere in which the same two algal Trebouxia species (provisionally named TR1 and TR9) coexist in every thallus. Ramalina farinacea symbionts were characterized based on the two fungal nuclear loci (nrITS and rpb2) along with the primary and secondary structures of nrITS

Lichens of fruit trees in the selected locations in Podlaskie Voivodeship [North-Eastern Poland]

open access: yesEnvironmental Protection and Natural Resources, 2017
The aim of this paper is to present the diversity of the lichen species on fruit trees (Malus sp., Pyrus sp., Prunus sp. and Cerasus sp.) growing in orchards in selected villages and towns in the Podlaskie Voivodeship.

Antimicrobial and Herbicidal Activities of the Fruticose Lichen Ramalina From Guimaras Island, Philippines [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Lichens, a unique symbiosis between two or three organisms, are known to produce metabolites that can be tapped as biopesticides for agriculture. In this research study, the fruticose lichen Ramalina was collected within Guimaras Island, Philippines.

Biological Flora of Britain and Ireland: Cytisus scoparius*

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 7, Page 1877-1933, July 2025.
Broom is an attractive and common native plant across Britain, Ireland and most of Europe, and yet it is considered a harmful and invasive weed around the rest of the world. This is aided by broom thriving on poor dry soils, helped by using green stems for photosynthesis and having root nodules to fix nitrogen.

Fungal-associated NO is involved in the regulation of oxidative stress during rehydration in lichen symbiosis

open access: yesBMC Microbiology, 2010
Background Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are normally produced in respiratory and photosynthetic electron chains and their production is enhanced during desiccation/rehydration. Nitric oxide (NO) is a ubiquitous and multifaceted molecule involved in cell

Predictability of the combined effects of sulphur dioxide and nitrate on the green-algal lichen Ramalina farinacea [PDF]

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Botany, 1997
The interactive effects of SO2 and NO3− on the green-algal lichen Ramalina farinacea (L.) Ach. were investigated using the degree of chlorophyll phaeophytinization and ultrastructural damage to the Trebouxia photobiont. Thalli were submitted to several factorial design experiments in which they were exposed to mean SO2 concentrations ranging from 118 ...

Fungal-algal interactions in Ramalina menziesii and its associated epiphytic lichen community [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Lichens are a fascinating example of a symbiotic mutualism. It is still uncertain which processes guide fungal-photobiont interactions, and whether they are random or of a more complex nature. Here, the fungal-algal interactions in Ramalina menziesii and
