In 1928 Chandrasekhara Raman reported a process in which a material would simultaneously absorb one photon and emit another. The energies of the two photons differed by an amount corresponding to the energy difference between two quantum-mechanical levels of the medium.

Ordinary Raman scattering studies yield information on low-energy excitations of molecules, liquids, and solids. Such information, contained in the frequency shift, k-vector and polarization of the scattered photon, is in general restricted to states which are typically up to 5 × 10-2eV from the ground state of the system under study.
