Assessing the anisotropy of rammed earth

Construction and Building Materials, 2009
Rammed earth construction is an ancient technique that is attracting renewed interest throughout the world today. Since it is carried out by stacking layers of rammed earth, it is possible that the rammed earth material is anisotropic. This paper presents the first study of this anisotropy, carried out on two scales.

Modern Rammed Earth in Earth Architecture

Advanced Materials Research, 2012
Rammed earth is a technique for building walls using the raw materials of earth, chalk, lime and gravel. Rammed earth is a structural wall system built of natural mineral soils compacted in thin layers within sturdy formwork. People have been using various forms of earth to build structures for centuries.

Rammed Earth House Construction

Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1985
An elementary analysis for calculation of stresses in a rammed earth house is presented. The analysis permits calculation of safe wall height, and an examination of safety of these structures. It is observed that the usual wall thickness is quite safe; the thickness can be reduced by at least a third without endangering safety and this can lead to a ...
