Evolution of dark colour in toucans (Ramphastidae): a case of molecular adaptation?
Journal of Evolutionary Biology, 2016AbstractIn the last decades, researchers have been able to determine the molecular basis of some phenotypes, to test for evidence of natural selection upon them, and to demonstrate that the same genes or genetic pathways can be associated with convergent traits.

Andean uplift, Plio-Pleistocene climatic fluctuation, and river dynamics in the Amazon basin have all been implicated in the diversification of the South American avifauna. We reconstructed phylogenetic relationships in the genus Selenidera, which has served as a classic case of putative refugial speciation, and the closely related genus Andigena, to ...

Additional information on reproductive behavior of the Red-breasted Toucan, Ramphastos dicolorus (Aves: Piciformes: Ramphastidae) [PDF]
Abstract: Ramphastidae is Family of secondary cavity-nesting birds that is endemic to the Neotropical region. Here we provide a comprehensive literature review of nest measurements, and new information on characteristics of the nest cavity, parental nest attendance, incubation and nestling period of the Red-breasted Toucan, Ramphastos dicolorus.

Alloplastic and Heteroplastic Bill Prostheses in 2 Ramphastidae Birds
Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery, 2002A black-necked aracari (Pteroglossus aracaris) was presented for a beak injury in which one-fifth of the maxillary rhamphotheca was lost. A portion of a maxillary bill from a dead bird of the same species was used to replace the missing beak of the injured bird.

Although plumage color aberrations are common in birds, they often are difficult or even impossible to properly identify in the field. Even though some of these aberrations are common, including progressive greying, leucism, and albinism, there is confusion among the mechanisms responsible for each of the color aberrations.
