Will Brazilian City Dwellers Actively Engage in Urban Conservation? A Case Study with the Charismatic Neotropical Blue-and-Yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna)

open access: yesBirds, 2022
The Blue-and-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna) is a charismatic and easily recognized species. While they are classified as being of “least concern” in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, their populations are declining.

Applications of Laparoscopic Techniques in Wildlife 腹腔镜技术在野生动物中的应用

open access: yesWildlife Letters, Volume 3, Issue 3, Page 124-137, September 2025.
In wildlife conservation, we have compiled the applications of laparoscopy, summarized into four areas. First, laparoscopy provides a reliable protocol for sex identification in wild species lacking apparent sexual dimorphism. Second, reproductive management with the involvement of laparoscopy is instrumental in maintaining and restoring species ...

Use of acupuncture in a Ramphastos toco with paralysis in posterior member

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Higiene e Sanidade Animal, 2015
A toucan arrived at the Wildlife Conservation Center Silvester of Ilha Solteira led by the police in July 2014. After the physical examination was seen this changes in left member: atrophy in the tarsalmetatarsal muscles, all fingers crossed cranial position, absence of superficial and deep sensitivity in the fingers and difficulty in movement.

Multi‐scale habitat selection of key frugivores predicts large‐seeded tree recruitment in tropical forest restoration

open access: yesEcosphere, 2021
Large‐seeded, animal‐dispersed (LSAD) trees include some of the most valuable and threatened species in the tropics, but they are chronically underrepresented in regenerating forests.

Anthropogenic disturbances simplify frugivory interactions in Amazonia

open access: yesOikos, Volume 2025, Issue 7, July 2025.
Frugivory interactions are essential ecological processes for the regeneration of tropical forests, ensuring ecosystem resilience following disturbances. However, little is known about how frugivory interactions are shaped by anthropogenic disturbances, especially in Amazonia – one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth.

Sexual dimorphism in Ramphastos toco and Ramphastos dicolorus (Piciformes, Aves) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Phenotypic sexual dimorphism seems to be rare in the Ramphastidae family, except in Pteroglossus viridis and in the genus Selenidera. Many breeders of wild birds believe that specimens of Ramphastos toco can be sexed using bill characteristics.

Evolution of bill size in relation to body size in toucans and hornbills (Aves: Piciformes and Bucerotiformes)

open access: yesZoologia (Curitiba), 2014
Evidence that the bill of the Toco Toucan, Ramphastos toco Statius Muller, 1776, has a specialized role in heat dissipation suggests a new function for the large and light-weight bill of the toucan family (Piciformes: Ramphastidae).
