DNA metabarcoding reveals greater plant diversity than morphological seed analysis of bird feces

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences, Volume 14, Issue 1, January-February 2026.
Abstract Premise Fruit‐eating birds drive seed dispersal in recovering tropical ecosystems, shaping forest regeneration. Molecular techniques, such as DNA metabarcoding, enable diet analysis from feces and can provide complementary frugivory data where dispersal is infrequent, as well as aid in seed identification in hyper‐diverse regions lacking ...

Nest attendance by tropical and temperate passerine birds: Same constancy, different strategy

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 9, Issue 23, Page 13555-13566, December 2019., 2019
We compared avian attendance data during incubation of 112 New World temperate and tropical passerine species. The amount of time that parents incubated their eggs did not differ between regions, but tropical birds employed a different attendance strategy.

Predação de Ramphocelus carbo (Pallas, 1764) por Oxybelis fulgidus (Daudin, 1803) no Sudoeste da Amazônia brasileira

open access: yesNature and Conservation, 2021
A O. fulgidus predou o Ramphocelus carbo numa

Bird records from the rural landscape of Igarapé-Açu municipality, Northeastern Pará [PDF]

open access: yesBoletim do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Ciências Naturais, 2009
This paper reports on bird records from the little studied Bragantina region, in the densely populated Northeastern Amazon. This region was a center of human colonization in the last century, resulting in the nearly complete replacement of rainforests by

Understorey bird responses to the abandonment of artisanal gold mining in Guyana

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 10, Page 2774-2786, October 2025.
Whilst many forest‐dependent birds will avoid the exposed mine centre, diversity at the immediate edge has the potential to recover, particularly in smaller and older mines. As we have found that natural vegetation recovery occurs at the mine edges and not within the centre, targeted restoration efforts might focus on mine edges to enhance recovery ...

Recuperation of the Terra Firme Forest Understory Bird Fauna Eight Years after a Wildfire in Eastern Acre, Brazil

open access: yesInternational Journal of Ecology, Volume 2015, Issue 1, 2015., 2015
The present study evaluated the characteristics of the understory bird fauna of four fragments of terra firme forest in eastern Acre, Brazil, that were impacted by wildfires in 2005. The study investigated the species richness and the composition of trophic guilds using mist‐netting on eight transects (four in burned plots and four in control plots in ...

Rainforest Fragmentation Decreases the Robustness of Plant‐Frugivore Interaction Networks

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 4, July 2025.
Our study in northern Costa Rica found that larger forest fragments and greater forest cover boost frugivore species richness and strengthen the modularity and robustness of plant–frugivore networks, with three tanager species serving as key species. Consequently, conserving these species and maintaining larger, contiguous forest areas is essential for

Spatial Variation in Bird Community Composition in Relation to Topographic Gradient and Forest Heterogeneity in a Central Amazonian Rainforest

open access: yesInternational Journal of Ecology, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
We investigated the effects of landscape features and forest structure on the avian community at the Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke near Manaus, in the Brazilian Amazon. We sampled the landscape and forest in 72 50 × 50 m plots systematically distributed in the reserve, covering an area of 6,400 ha.
