Amphibian loss alters periphyton structure and invertebrate growth in montane streams. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Anim Ecol, 2022
This paper demonstrates that amphibian loss increases periphyton biomass, causes shifts in algal assemblages and reduces invertebrate growth. It highlights the importance of protecting amphibians in order to maintain normal stream ecosystem functioning, especially in nonforested streams where periphyton in the main energy resource.

Impaired Proteostasis is Linked to Neurological Pathology in a Zebrafish NGLY1 Deficiency Model. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Inherit Metab Dis
ABSTRACT NGLY1 is a key enzyme in the process of misfolded protein deglycosylation. Bi‐allelic pathogenic variants in NGLY1 cause N‐glycanase deficiency, also known as congenital disorder of deglycosylation (NGLY1‐CDDG). This rare and multisystem autosomal recessive disorder is linked to a variable phenotype of global developmental delay, neuromuscular

Successful Transmission and Isolation of a Fungal Pathogen From Wild Frogs to a Captive Amphibian Model Species: Fine Scale Pathogen Genetic Diversity and Infection-Induced Changes in Skin Bacteria. [PDF]

open access: yesEnviron Microbiol
The isolation of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) from low‐load wild amphibians revealed multiple genotypes, including a potential hybrid, highlighting ongoing pathogen genetic mixing in natural environments. Additionally, Bd infection induced skin microbiome shifts in Hymenochirus boettgeri, demonstrating its utility as a model for studying ...

Adverse Outcome Pathways for Chronic Copper Toxicity to Fish and Amphibians

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology and Chemistry, Volume 41, Issue 12, Page 2911-2927, December 2022., 2022
Abstract In the present review, we synthesize information on the mechanisms of chronic copper (Cu) toxicity using an adverse outcome pathway framework and identify three primary pathways for chronic Cu toxicity: disruption of sodium homeostasis, effects on bioenergetics, and oxidative stress.
