Numerical methods for boundary value problems on random domains [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In this thesis, we consider the numerical solution of elliptic boundary value problems on random domains. The underlying domain is modelled via a random vector field which is given by its mean and its covariance.

INFORMATIONAL ENTROPY IN SIMULATION OF ONE-DIMENSIONAL RANDOM FIELDS

open access: yesTASK Quarterly, 2002
The entropy H of a continuous distribution with probability density function f(•) is defined as a function of the number of nodes (n) in a one-dimensional scalar random field.

Hydrostatic pressure activates HIF‐1α via β‐catenin to promote stemness in breast cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
To mimic the elevated intestinal fluid pressure in breast cancers, we loaded human breast cancer cells (MCF‐7, MDA‐MB‐453, and BT‐474) to 50 mmHg hydrostatic pressure. Hydrostatic pressure exposure upregulated HIF‐1α and induced stemness in MCF‐7 and BT‐474 cells.

Probabilistic finite element stiffness of a laterally loaded monopile based on an improved asymptotic sampling method

open access: yesJournal of Civil Engineering and Management, 2015
The mechanical responses of an offshore monopile foundation mounted in over-consolidated clay are calculated by employing a stochastic approach where a nonlinear p–y curve is incorporated with a finite element scheme.

Directed evolution of enzymes at the crossroads of tradition and innovation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An iterative cycle of data‐driven enzyme optimization comprising four stages: genetic diversification of a template enzyme, expression of protein variants, high‐throughput evaluation, and machine‐learning‐guided redesign of the next variant library.

An experimental investigation of the natural frequency statistics of a beam with spatially correlated random masses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Experimental investigations into the dynamic response of structures with material or geometrical random fields usually depend upon an initial characterization of this variability, with very little control over the statistics at its early manufacturing ...

A random field excursion model of salt-induced concrete delamination [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
Salt induced concrete delamination is a problem often encountered in parking garage slabs in northern climates where deicing salts are heavily used. A random field model of the delamination process is investigated and compared against some field data ...

Sampling and Kriging Spatial Means: Efficiency and Conditions

open access: yesSensors, 2009
Sampling and estimation of geographical attributes that vary across space (e.g., area temperature, urban pollution level, provincial cultivated land, regional population mortality and state agricultural production) are common yet important constituents ...

Molecular characterization of covRS mutations in M1UK Streptococcus pyogenes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) acquires covRS mutations driving a hypervirulent bacterial state, frequently associated with invasive disease‐like necrotizing fasciitis. We demonstrate that the newly emerged M1UK GAS lineage can also acquire these mutations.
