Variables, in Particular Random Variables
2005We argue that the concept of a variable as classically understood in mathematics and physics is didactically and scientifically inadequate for the needs of probability and statistics and we propose an alternative concept. A revision should have political implications for the relation between mathematical and statistical teaching.

In this chapter a connection between measure theory and the basic notion of probability theory - a random variable - is established. In fact, random variables are the functions from the probability space to some other measurable space. The definition of a random variable as a measurable function is presented. Several simple examples of random variables

Random Variables and Random Vectors
2003It often happens that we do not really care about the outcome of an experiment itself, but rather we are interested in some consequence of this outcome. For instance, a gambler is not primarily interested in the question whether or not heads comes up, but instead in the financial consequences of such an outcome.
