Detecting environmental change in eastern Australia: rangeland health in the semi-arid woodlands

Science of The Total Environment, 2003
We examined changes in rangeland health in the semi-arid woodlands of eastern Australia at fixed sites between 1989 and 1999. Over the 11-year period there were significant declines in the quality of the vegetation, and changes in plant species were driven largely by seasonality, and to a lesser extent, amount of rainfall.

Mulch more so than compost improves soil health to reestablish vegetation in a semiarid rangeland

Restoration Ecology, 2022
Up to half of the world's drylands have degraded, dysfunctional soils that lower success rates of restoration efforts to reestablish lost vegetation. Because soil amendments of organic matter have the potential to improve multiple ecosystem functions and

Assessing Large Herbivore Management Strategies in the Northern Great Plains Using Rangeland Health Metrics

Natural areas journal, 2020
Maximizing rangeland health has become a popular theme in North American grassland management. Quantifying rangeland health is particularly important when attempting to compare different management strategies ongoing in priority conservation areas, such ...

Ranch Profitability of Improving Soil Health on Rangelands

Rangeland Ecology & Management, 2021
Conservation practices can maintain or enhance the quantity of ecosystem services realized by both private individuals and society. However, implementing these practices generally has costs that may exceed the benefit received by a private economic agent, particularly if costs are immediate and benefits accrue in the future.

Rangeland health assessment of Theodore Roosevelt National Park

2023
We assessed rangeland health at 12 locations distributed across Theodore Roosevelt National Monument (THRO) in June 2022. Assessments were conducted using version 5 of Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health (IIRH), a qualitative protocol designed to assess departures from reference condition for three rangeland attributes: Soil and Site Stability,

Soil properties in northern temperate pastures do not vary with management practices and are independent of rangeland health

Canadian Journal of Soil Science, 2019
: Studies examining the influence of disturbance and management history on pasture soils across a large sampling area are uncommon. We report on the soil properties found in 102 northern temperate pastures sampled in central Alberta, Canada, and relate ...

Multi-faceted analysis of land use impact on rangeland health: Insights from normalized difference vegetation index assessment in stream, road, and mining areas

Journal of Ecological Engineering
This study provides an in-depth analysis of specific land use areas within a semi-arid rangeland region by utilizing the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI).
