Digital Necrobacillosis in Norwegian Wild Tundra Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus)

Outbreaks of digital necrobacillosis in Norwegian wild tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) are described. The outbreaks occurred in late summer and autumn 2007 and 2008, subsequent to periods with an unusually high number of days with precipitation and high air temperature.

Rangifer tarandus (Linnaeus, 1758) – северный олень Описание. В коллекции есть несколько изолированных зубов i2 ЗИН 28474/11, р2 ЗИН 28474/12 и m3 ЗИН 28474/8 из II культурного слоя. Второй резец i2 ЗИН 28474/11 имеет длину – 7.0 мм, ширину – 5.5 мм. Коронка второго премоляра р2 ЗИН 28474/12 была найдена вместе с фрагментом зубной кости.

Besnoitia sp. was diagnosed in two caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) which died of pneumonia at the Assiniboine Park Zoo (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) in 1983. During the following 3 yr besnoitiosis spread to an isolated herd of caribou, to mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) and to reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus).

At birth reindeer calves often are exposed to sub‐zero ambient temperatures (Ta) sometimes even combined with wind and precipitation. The resting metabolism was measured in three different age groups (1, 7 and 14 days old) at Ta's of –20, –5, 10 and 20oC.

Neurologic disease in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) introduced into Ontario

In May, 1969, a small herd of reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) from Norway was placed in a recently enclosed area formerly inhabited by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). The animals subsequently developed signs of neurologic disease.

North American reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) are seasonally polyestrus short-day breeders. Seasonal ovarian activity begins in late August with an estrous cycle length of 24 ± 3.4 days.
