A High-Throughput Ancient DNA Extraction Method for Large-Scale Sample Screening. [PDF]
ABSTRACT Large‐scale DNA screening of palaeontological and archaeological collections remains a limiting and costly factor for ancient DNA studies. Several DNA extraction protocols are routinely used in ancient DNA laboratories and have even been automated on robotic platforms.

Seasonal variations and responses to normal activity of the deep body temperature in the Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) [PDF]
Deep body temperature was recorded in two female Svalbard reindeer during summer and winter. The reindeer were subjected to naturally occurring weather, photoperiod and stimuli in outdoor pens on Svalbard.

Effect of wind on Svalbard reindeer fur insulation [PDF]
The heat transfer through Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) fur samples was studied with respect to wind velocity, season and animal age. A total of 33 dorsal fur sections were investigated using a wind tunnel.

Elk and Deer Habituate to Stationary Deterrents in an Agricultural Landscape. [PDF]
This study investigated the responses of Roosevelt elk (Cervus canadensis roosevelti) and black‐tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) to acoustic and visual deterrents on crop fields in the Cowichan Valley, British Columbia. Both species were most likely to flee and exhibit alertness in response to playbacks of human vocalizations, while ...

Stress responses to repeated captures in a wild ungulate [PDF]
While capture-mark-recapture studies provide essential individual-level data in ecology, repeated captures and handling may impact animal welfare and cause scientific bias.

Contrasting genomic consequences of anthropogenic reintroduction and natural recolonization in high‐arctic wild reindeer [PDF]
Anthropogenic reintroduction can supplement natural recolonization in reestablishing a species' distribution and abundance. However, both reintroductions and recolonizations can give rise to founder effects that reduce genetic diversity and increase ...

Whole-Genome Analyses Reveal the Distinct Taxonomic Status of the Hainan Population of Endangered Rucervus eldii and Its Conservation Implications. [PDF]
ABSTRACT Eld's deer Rucervus eldii (McClelland, 1842) is an ungulate that lives in tropical lowland forests in several countries of Indochina and Hainan Island of China. Its remaining population is small and scattered, and the species is listed as an Endangered species on the IUCN Red List.

Mortality and survival of semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus L.) calves in northern Finland [PDF]
During the period 1999 to 2004 the reindeer calf survival and mortality were studied in two reindeer-herding cooperatives and in five herding-groups in northern Finland, where in total 1725 calves were fitted with mortality indicating radio-transmitters ...

Woodland caribou calving fidelity: Spatial location, habitat, or both? [PDF]
Majority of woodland caribou expressed some type of fidelity during the calving period with habitat fidelity (50%) being more frequently expressed in calving sequences than spatial fidelity (29%). Older individuals were more likely to express spatial fidelity, whereas lower availability of high‐quality habitat increased the probability an individual ...

The role of indirect interspecific effects in the stochastic dynamics of a simple trophic system. [PDF]
This paper explores indirect interspecific effects (IIEs) within a high‐Arctic food chain using stochastic population models. By simulating the dynamics of Svalbard reindeer, Arctic foxes and barnacle geese, we reveal strong IIEs on goose dynamics, highlighting IIEs' importance for long‐term species coexistence and community dynamics. Abstract Indirect
