Assessment of RANS, LES, and Hybrid RANS/LES Models for the Prediction of Low-Pr Turbulent Flows

Volume 1: Flow Manipulation and Active Control; Bio-Inspired Fluid Mechanics; Boundary Layer and High-Speed Flows; Fluids Engineering Education; Transport Phenomena in Energy Conversion and Mixing; Turbulent Flows; Vortex Dynamics; DNS/LES and Hybrid RANS/LES Methods; Fluid Structure Interaction; Fluid Dynamics of Wind Energy; Bubble, Droplet, and Aerosol Dynamics, 2018
The predictive capability of RANS, hybrid RANS/LES and LES turbulence models for momentum and thermal energy transfer in wall bounded low-Pr turbulent flows is investigated. Plane channel flow simulations are performed for Reτ = 150 and 640 for Pr = 0.025 and 0.71 with and without buoyancy effects, including both forced and mixed force/natural ...

Hybrid RANS/LES Approaches

2002
This chapter is devoted to the presentation of hybrid RANS/LES methods. The main motivation for hybridizing the two methods is to decrease the cost of the traditional large-eddy simulation method, which is large because of: — the requirement to directly capture all the scales of motion responsible for turbulence production; — the observed ...

Interface conditions for hybrid RANS/LES calculations

International Journal of Heat and Fluid Flow, 2006
Hybrid RANS/LES simulations, in which the attached boundary layers are computed using the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations, and the non-equilibrium regions of the flow by large-eddy simulation (LES), have received considerable attention over recent years. One issue that may affect (sometimes significantly) the accuracy of the results of

Coupled RANS/LES methods

2006
The present chapter concisely describes the hybrid methods as applied in FLOMANIA by different partners. In the first chapter the non-zonal DES method is described, whereas in the second chapter the zonal approaches are presented. Beginning with a description of the general idea of the method in the chapter on DES an overview of existing versions is ...

Hybrid RANS/LES of a Supersonic Combustor

26th AIAA Applied Aerodynamics Conference, 2008
Preliminary results from simulations modeling ush wall fuel injection in scramjet engines is presented. The simulations use a hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes and large eddy simulation methodology, where the primary function of the RANS mode is to act as a wall model for the large eddy simulation.

Sensor Controlled Zonal RANS-LES Method

2013
A sensor was developed to detect aerodynamic regions in the computational domain of aerodynamic relevant flows where a common RANS simulation does no longer provide physically reliable results. These regions of the computational domain were then treated with a higher order turbulence model to suppress the modeling error being introduced by standard ...

Hybrid RANS/LES of a supersonic combustor

Aerospace Science and Technology, 2017
Abstract A novel method for the hybridization of RANS and LES is presented tailored for the utilization in supersonic combustor ducts. The intention is to treat the largest portion of the boundary layers with RANS in order to reduce the computational requirements of LES in near-wall regions.

One-Equation RG Hybrid RANS/LES Modelling

2008
A one-equation variant of a previously developed two-equation, renormalization group (RG) based, hybrid RANS/LES model is presented. The model has a transport equation for the mean dissipation rate and an algebraically prescribed length scale. The length scale is proportional to the wall distance in RANS regions of the flow and to the filter width in ...

Interfacing Boundary Conditions towards Zonal RANS/LES

2012
An improvement of the Vortex Method proposed by Sergent [19] and Mathey et al. [14] is presented. The method can be used to generate inflow boundary conditions for a LES or instantaneous interfacing conditions in a zonal RANS/LES simulation. The method is tested in a channel flow case at Re τ = 590 and compared to a bi-periodic LES case.
