Abstract The offence of rape, originally a common law offence, became a statutory offence in 1957,and was later defined by statute in 1976. The offence was extended in 1992 so that a husband could be convicted of raping his wife. In 1994 the definition of rape was extended to include non-consensual anal intercourse upon a male or female.
