Temperature measurements in a rapid compression machine using anisole planar laser-induced fluorescence

open access: yes, 2015
International audienceAdvanced combustion processes induced by self-ignition mechanisms in piston engines, such as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI), especially need an accurate spatio-temporal temperature information because their ...

Influence of Surface Finish on the Tribological Performance of AlTiBN Coatings Deposited on Forming Tools

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Aluminum and nitride coatings are used in industry because they are hard, resist wear, and protect against oxidation. Adding boron can improve friction behavior and other properties. This study tests coatings on surfaces with different finishes. Results show smoother surfaces perform better, while rough ones wear faster, although coatings can reduce ...

Mechanical response of paperboard in rapid compression – the rapid ZD-tester, a measurement technique

open access: yes, 2022
Paperboard is a common material for packages and other carriers of information. During rotary printing processes, the paperboard is subjected to rapid deformations in the out-of-plane direction as it passes through the nip between the rolls of the ...

Experimental Characterization and Constitutive Modeling of the Effect of Prior Inelastic Strain on the Viscoplastic Behavior of AD730 at 700 °C

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows that superalloys used in aircraft engine disks become much more prone to deformation at high temperatures if they have been strained during manufacturing. This effect increases with the level of prior strain but eventually reaches a limit.

Combustion process visualisation in rapid compression machine modelling combustion in spark ignition engines

open access: yes, 2013
Mixture preparation and combustion processes in internal combustion engines are very complex and very difficult to investigate. These processes run very quickly and their parameters are changed quickly and in wide ranges. Therefore, the interpretation of

Low Cycle Repetitive Loading of Ti‐6Al‐4V‐Epoxy Composite Lattice Structures for Enhanced Energy Dissipation and Damage Tolerance

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Composite Ti–6Al–4V–epoxy lattice structures are additively manufactured and epoxy infiltrated for cyclic loading. At low lattice volume fractions, hybridization produces synergistic gains in stiffness and energy dissipation. At higher volume fractions, synergy diminishes, although composites still exceed metallic lattices in specific energy ...

Gasoline surrogate modeling of gasoline ignition in a rapid compression machine and comparison to experiments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The use of gasoline in homogeneous charge compression ignition engines (HCCI) and in duel fuel diesel - gasoline engines, has increased the need to understand its compression ignition processes under engine-like conditions.

Microstructure Reconstruction in Battery Electrodes Using Machine Learning Based on Low‐Voltage Focused Ion Beam–Scanning Electron Microscopy Tomography Images

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Low‐voltage FIB‐SEM tomography combined with a image preprocessing pipeline improves phase contrast and enables reliable machine‐learning segmentation of conductive networks in lithium‐ion battery electrodes. Structural descriptors are extracted from segmented images, done semimanually and automated, and compared.
