Lightning-Based Tropical Cyclone Rapid Intensification Guidance

Weather and Forecasting, 2023
Abstract With several seasons of Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) data, this work revisits incorporating lightning observations into operational tropical cyclone rapid intensification guidance. GLM provides freely available, real-time lightning data over the central and eastern North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans.

Rapid Intensification of a Sheared Tropical Storm

Monthly Weather Review, 2010
Abstract A weak tropical storm (Gabrielle in 2001) experienced a 22-hPa pressure fall in less than 3 h in the presence of 13 m s−1 ambient vertical wind shear. A convective cell developed downshear left of the center and moved cyclonically and inward to the 17-km radius during the period of rapid intensification. This cell had one of the

Dissecting the rapid intensification of Hurricane Patricia

Physics Today, 2016
A year ago a modest-looking tropical cyclone unexpectedly strengthened into the most intense hurricane ever recorded. A confluence of favorable conditions explains why.

Observations of Atypical Rapid Intensification Characteristics in Hurricane Dorian (2019)

Monthly Weather Review, 2021
AbstractMultiple observation and analysis datasets are used to demonstrate two key features of the Atypical Rapid Intensification (ARI) process that occurred in Atlantic Hurricane Dorian (2019): 1) precession and nutations of the vortex tilt and 2) blocking of the impinging upper-level environmental flow by the outflow.

Hurricane dynamics and rapid intensification via dynamical systems indicators

2021
<p>Although the lifecycle of hurricanes is well understood, it is a struggle to represent their dynamics in numerical models, under both present and future climates. We consider the atmospheric circulation as a chaotic dynamical system, and show that the formation of a hurricane corresponds to a reduction of the phase space of the ...

Probabilistic Predictions on TC Rapid Intensification

Some of Tropical Cyclones undergo a rapid intensification process, which causes them to become stronger typhoons. Rapid Intensification (RI) is defined as the increase in maximum sustained winds to 30 kt (15 m/s) or more within a 24-hour period (Kaplan and DeMaria, 2003).
