Basidiobolomycosis caused by a rare species - Basidiobolus meristosporus. [PDF]

open access: yesMed Mycol Case Rep, 2023
A five-year girl was referred to our centre with swelling over the right lower back. The child was evaluated to rule out chronic cutaneous tuberculosis, lymphoma and soft tissue tumor. Biopsy of the lesion on culture yielded Basidiobolus species. Whole genome sequencing of the isolate identified it as Basidiobolus meristosporus.

The Contribution of Rare Species to Community Phylogenetic Diversity across a Global Network of Forest Plots

open access: yesAmerican Naturalist, 2012
Niche differentiation has been proposed as an explanation for rarity in species assemblages. To test this hypothesis requires quantifying the ecological similarity of species. This similarity can potentially be estimated by using phylogenetic relatedness.

Pollen Interference Between Rare and Common Species

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
ABSTRACTThe mechanisms underlying plant species distribution and abundance have been long studied in ecology. However, the role of heterospecific pollen interference in shaping these patterns needs more attention. Species distribution and abundance are important factors determining whether a species is endangered or not; thus, understanding the impact ...

Threatened species not necessarily rare, rare species not necessarily threatened

open access: yesEnvironmental Conservation, 1997
In the beautifully-illustrated book of rare and threatened plants of Greece (Phitos et al. 1995), the selection of species is based strictly on the four World Conservation Union (IUCN) categories of ‘extinct’, ‘endangered’, ‘vulnerable’ and ‘rare’ (Lucas & Synge 1978). The Swedish ‘red data’ book of plants (Aronsson et al.

Regional Coexistence of Species and Competition between Rare Species [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1971
A model is developed for the coexistence and exclusion of species over a region of similar habitable patches. Since the balance of local extinction and colonization would leave some patches unoccupied even without competitors, species may coexist even when all the patches are the same. Regional competition coefficients are found when species affect the

How do biodiversity patterns of river animals emerge from the distributions of common and rare species? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We studied the patterns of commonness and rarity for one vertebrate (fish) and four freshwater insect taxa (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera and Coleoptera) in southwestern France (57,000 km²), and we analysed the relationships between the location

Local and regional rarity in a diverse tropical fish assemblage [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Because most species in an ecological assemblage are rare, much of the species richness we value is due to taxa with few individuals or a restricted distribution.
