Drag coefficients in rarefied flow [PDF]
The X1 expansion tube of the Centre for Hypersonics at the University of Queensland has developed and studied a test facility for hypervelocity rarefied flow. Dr. Macrossan has proposed the approximate theory of the drag of a blunt body in rarefied flow which is a modification of Whitfield’s theory (Macrossan, 2002b).

Phenomenology of Rarefied Gas Flows
1991Abstract Until now we have been concerned only with phenomena in a dilute gas, which means that we have neglected all effects of boundaries and boundary layers.

Flow of Rarefied Gas through a Circular Pipe
The Physics of Fluids, 1968The asymptotic behavior at small Knudsen number for two problems involving the flow of rarefied gas through a circular pipe, Poiseuille flow and thermal creep is treated using the Boltzmann-Krook equation. By a matching procedure the outer solution for the continuum regime and the solution for the Knudsen layer are determined simultaneously.

Computation of rarefied hypersonic flows
2008Numerical techniques for the simulation of hypersonic flows of rarefied gases are examined in an analytical review. The direct-simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method developed to interpret measurement data obtained by the Space Shuttle in the SUMS project is described; the fundamental limitations of the DMSC approach are discussed; and modifications to ...

Interferometry in Rarefied Gas Flows
1993A survey is given on optical interferometry using a Wollaston prism differential interferometer. With a number of selected examples, its potential, especially in the field of low density flow diagnostics, is demonstrated. In the first part, differential interferometry with spark light sources is treated and is shown to be a very effective means for ...

On the Rarefied Gas Flow in Pipes
Volume 6: 5th International Conference on Multibody Systems, Nonlinear Dynamics, and Control, Parts A, B, and C, 2005Rarefied gas flow in a pipe is treated in the paper by modeling the slip boundary condition by means of a fractional derivative. At that the order of the derivative is conveniently chosen to be a function of the average value of the Knudsen number so that the entire Knudsen number range, from continuum flow to free molecular flow, is covered. Very good

Density Field for Rarefied Flow through an Orifice
The Physics of Fluids, 1961A theoretical investigation is made of the density field for rarefied flow through an orifice. Within the assumptions of Maxwellian velocity distribution of the gas and of diffuse reflection from the reservoir walls, exact expressions are found for the density at the center line of the effusing stream for a circular orifice and for all regions of the ...
