Neuroimaging of Rasmussen's encephalitis
Pediatric Radiology, 1993A case of Rasmussen's encephalitis is reviewed. Focal seizures and hemiparesis in a 5-year-old child progressed over a period of 2 1/2 years. Neuroimaging findings showed progressive atrophy of the right temporal lobe. The diagnosis of this syndrome is possible using a combination of the clinical symptoms and neuroimaging findings.

Rasmussen's encephalitis (RE) is characterized by focal seizures, often associated with epilepsia partialis continua, progressive neurological deterioration, hemispheric atrophy, and inflammatory histopathology. Surgical exclusion of the affected hemisphere is the only treatment that halts progression of the disease.

Rasmussen’s syndrome is a childhood developing syndrome, usually characterized by refractory focal motor seizures (epilepsia partialis continua). Most cases originate between the age of 1 and 10 years, mean age about 5 years. Symptoms are attributed to chronic pathogen-free inflammation of both gray and white matter.
