The Ratchet Effect and the Market for Secondhand Workers
Journal of Labor Economics, 1992Workers in a long-term relationship often have an incentive to hide their ability early in the relationship to avoid having the firm increase the level of output expected from them in the future. We show that competition for older workers will permit the implementation of efficient piece-rate contracts.

Target Ratcheting, Short-Term Salaries and the Ratchet Effect
SSRN Electronic Journal, 2015This paper analyzes the relation between target ratcheting and the ratchet effect. Empirical results are mixed about the extent to which target ratcheting leads to a ratchet effect. My contention is to show that short-term salaries mediate the relation between ratcheting targets and the ratchet effect.
