Stripe and bubble ratchets on asymmetric substrates
We show that various nonmonotonic ratchet effects can arise when mesophase pattern-forming systems, which exhibit anisotropic crystal, stripe, and bubble regimes, are coupled to one-dimensional asymmetric substrates under ac driving.

Spontaneous unidirectional rotation of a symmetric gear driven by spherical active particles
Time reversal asymmetry and spatial anisotropy are considered two prerequisites for Brownian ratchet. An intriguing realization can be achieved by placing an asymmetric gear in the suspension of motile rod-like bacteria.

New Effects and Methods in Brownian Transport
We consider the noise-induced transport of overdamped Brownian particles in a ratchet system driven by nonequilibrium symmetric three-level Markovian noise and additive white noise.

Optical rectification by ratchet transport in an asymmetric grating
We report on electron ratchet transport’s manifestation in the optical rectification (OR) of an asymmetric grating. The photon-drag enabled effect is magnified by asymmetric photon scatterings and the induced optical nonlinearity associated with the ...

Abstract The ray‐finned fishes include one out of every two species of living vertebrates on Earth and have an abundant fossil record stretching 380 million years into the past. The division of systematic knowledge of ray‐finned fishes between paleontologists working on extinct animals and neontologists studying extant species has obscured the ...

Local Search and the Evolution of World Models
Abstract An open question regarding how people develop their models of the world is how new candidates are generated for consideration out of infinitely many possibilities. We discuss the role that evolutionary mechanisms play in this process. Specifically, we argue that when it comes to developing a global world model, innovation is necessarily ...

Circular ratchet currents in two dimensional tellurene with an asymmetric grating
Terahertz ratchet effect converts alternating electric fields into direct currents in low-dimensional systems with broken spatial symmetry and provide a route towards room-temperature terahertz optoelectronics.

ABSTRACT Sustainability reports (SRs) are widely criticized for vague disclosures and selective emphasis on positive outcomes, yet systematic research on two core SR challenges remains limited: materiality (whether disclosed content is relevant) and balance (whether both achievements and challenges are reported).
