Strain ratcheting mechanisms in the backfill of integral bridges

open access: yesCanadian Geotechnical Journal
Integral bridges use a jointless and bearingless design to minimise long-term maintenance. Interaction between the abutments and backfill due to thermal movements of the deck causes an accumulation of strain and an associated increase in earth pressure over time, with the mechanisms underlying this increase not being well understood.

On the Assembly of Actin Polymerization‐Powered Motors

open access: yesMacromolecular Rapid Communications, EarlyView.
Actin polymerization‐powered motors have the highest speed when the actin recruiting‐polymerizing proteins are immobilized in polymer brushes on their surface. These motors orbit around larger tracer particles at pH above the isoelectric point of ActA but dock onto the tracer particles’ surface at lower pH. ABSTRACT Nano‐ and micromotors are a class of

Modeling Biocemented Sands: Hypoplastic Model for MICP‐Based Ground Improvement

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Bio‐cementation offers a sustainable and low‐carbon alternative to conventional ground improvement methods, aligning with the growing demand for green geotechnical solutions. To enable reliable numerical simulation of bio‐cemented soil behavior in engineering applications, advanced constitutive models are required to account for the effects of

Overshooting of Hypoplastic Models With Intergranular Strain: Manifestation, Implications and Remedy

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Intergranular strain extensions of hypoplasticity (IGS, ISA, GIS) are widely used to model small‐strain and cyclic soil behaviour. However, recent studies and our own simulations reveal that these models can exhibit stress overshooting not only under repeated small loading cycles but also during monotonic loading.

Experimental study on ratcheting behavior of eutectic tin-lead solder under multiaxial loading

open access: yes, 2019
A series of uniaxial and multiaxial ratcheting experiments have been conducted on 63Sn-37Pb solder alloys. It is shown that eutectic tin-lead solder is cyclic softening under uniaxial, pure torsional and axial/torsional ratcheting loading. Even low-level

Study on path independency on shape of plastic strain distribution accumulated due to long distance travel of temperature distribution

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2019
The prevention of excessive deformation by thermal ratcheting is important in the elevated temperature design of fast breeder reactors (FBR). In an experimental study that simulated a fast breeder reactor vessel near the coolant surface, it was reported ...

Chain‐Length Regulation by WzzE Is Necessary for, but Genetically Separable From, Cyclic Enterobacterial Common Antigen Synthesis

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
Here, we demonstrate that polysaccharide chain length regulation plays a distinct role in enabling formation of a cyclic molecule important for the bacterial cell surface. However, this function is necessary, but not sufficient for the cyclic molecule's biosynthesis.

Fatigue- Ratcheting Interaction Behavior of AISI 4340 Steel [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Ratcheting is known as accumulation of plastic strain during asymmetric cyclic loading of materials under non-zero mean stress. This study intends to investigate the ratcheting behavior in AISI 4340 steel which is mainly used for designing of railway ...

Powers and Practices in Labor Standards Enforcement

open access: yesRegulation &Governance, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Wage theft remains a pervasive problem internationally and within the United States. In response, worker advocates have sought stronger laws to deter violations and promote compliance. Yet formal authority alone may be insufficient; labor departments often fail to use the full extent of their legal authority to conduct vigorous enforcement ...

Consumers' Environmental Awareness and Firms' Managerial Delegation Contracts Under Emission Tax Policies

open access: yesScottish Journal of Political Economy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study considers consumers' environmental awareness of polluting firms' managerial delegation contracts and compares the effects of committed and time‐consistent emission tax policies. It reveals that when environmental performance (EP) incentives prevail, sales performance (SP) incentives depend on the emission tax type and competition ...
