Reliability of the Rating of Perceived Exertion at Ventilatory Threshold in Children
International Journal of Sports Medicine, 1992The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability of the rating of perceived exertion (RPE), using the Borg 6-20 scale, at ventilatory threshold (VT) in children. Thirty children (19 male, 11 female) with a mean +/- SD age of 10.4 +/- 1.1 yrs performed two graded exercise tests for the assessment of VT and VO2max.

Ratings of perceived exertion and affect in hot and cool environments
European Journal of Applied Physiology and Occupational Physiology, 1993The effects of hot and cool environments on perceptual and physiological responses during steady-state exercise were examined in men (n = 14) performing 30 min of constant exercise (cycle ergometry) at a perceived exertion of "somewhat hard". Subjects exercised at the same absolute exercise intensity in hot (40 degrees C), neutral (24 degrees C), and ...

Effects of Varying Levels of Hypohydration on Ratings of Perceived Exertion
International Journal of Sport Nutrition, 1993To investigate the effects of varying levels of hypohydration on ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) during moderate and heavy submaximal exercise, and at the lactate threshold (LT) and ventilatory threshold (VT), 9 male subjects cycled under states of euhydration (EU), moderate hypohydration (MH), and severe hypohydration (SH).

A Critical Review of the Literature on Ratings Scales for Perceived Exertion
Sports Medicine, 1985The study of human performance and perceived exertion during physical activity has been an area of considerable interest and research for over 50 years. This review considers the evidence of many investigators who have been researching the physiological basis as well as non-physiological basis for the ratings of perceived exertion. During low levels of

Factors That Influence the Rating of Perceived Exertion After Endurance Training.
International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance, 2018PURPOSE Session rating of perceived exertion (sRPE) is an often-used measure to assess athletes' training load (TL). However, little is known about which factors could optimize the quality of data collection thereof.

Observer ratings of perceived exertion in relation to self ratings and heart rate
Applied Ergonomics, 1986The results from a comparison made between observers' estimations of a bicycling subject's exertion and the self-raters' perceived exertion show that one can draw conclusions of an individual's exertion at physical work by using observer ratings. Six bicycling subjects (self-raters) cycled on a bicycle ergometer at six different power levels presented ...

The validity of regulating exercise intensity by ratings of perceived exertion
Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 1992The purpose of this investigation was to examine the regulation of exercise intensity by using Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE). The RPE equivalent to 50% and 70% VO2max was estimated by using standard clinical protocols on a treadmill and cycle ergometer. Subjects then produced the target RPEs on these modalities.

Validation of a Rating Scale of Perceived Exertion in Young Children
International Journal of Sports Medicine, 2001The aim of this study was to develop and validate a scale rating the perceived exertion of young children (RPE-C) who do not read. This scale presents seven pictures showing a man who becomes progressively fatigued. In order to evaluate this scale, we examined its reliability and sensitivity.
