Epistemological Skepticism(s) and Rational Self-Control
Monist, 2002In this paper I aim to do two things. First, I attempt to illustrate an interesting pattern of argument one can find in Hume's work. Next, I employ this Humean pattern of argument to show that IF there is a cogent and intuitive argument for any form of epistemological skepticism, which despite its cogency and intuitiveness has a (literally ...

In general the skeptic holds that there is no knowledge, i.e., that no one knows anything to be true. As the term is usually used in ordinary language, a skeptic doubts whether there is knowledge in some restricted domain. The skeptic about morals, for example, thinks there is no ethical knowledge, the religious skeptic no religious knowledge, and so ...

Skeptical hypotheses have been allowed to set the terms of the epistemological debate. They convince no one. Yet they have an enormous influence. It is often influence by provocation. They provoke epistemologists into endorsing metaphysical and linguistic positions that antecedently would have seemed to have had little appeal.

The so-called consensus on anthropogenic climate change is challenged, and doubts are casted regarding the credibility and accurateness of the IPCC reports.

Rational Skepticism in Pre-Diṅnāgan Buddhism
1988What I shall try to show in the present chapter and in the following chapter is that there are two currents present in Buddhist canonical literature from the very beginning and that these two currents are also predominant in the philosophical writings of early Mahāyāna systematizers such as Nāgārjuna and Vasubandhu.

Studies in East European Thought, 2010Shestov’s work can be summed up under six headings. Three are sharp contrasts, three are paradoxes. (1) First there is the contrast between Shestov the person, who was moderate, competent, and calm, and Shestov the thinker, who was extreme, incandescent, and impassioned.

Skepticism and the Sociology of Rational Discourse
1993Social psychologists are often accused of skepticism nowadays. Explaining rational discourse in terms of social organization or social interests seems to deprive such discourse of its rationality. This paper argues that sociologically-inspired explanations of rational talk at least do not deprive it of denotational value.

Skepticism, Nihilism and the Crisis of Rationality
2005If the question of skepticism is crucial to understanding the key epistemological problems affecting the development of German idealism, it must also affect our understanding of the project of critical theory. For critical theory is, in key respects, an adaptation of the concerns of German idealism to the crises of rationality that came to light in the

Rational Climate Skeptics: On the Strategic Communication of Scientific Data
SSRN Electronic Journal, 2017This paper presents a game-theoretical approach to climate change skeptics. The credibility gap between the scientist and the government is created if the preference of the scientist is not perfectly aligned with that of the government. The credibility gap is eliminated and the ex-ante social welfare is maximized if and only if the scientist’s ...
