An analytical ray casting of volume data

Proceedings Pacific Graphics '98. Sixth Pacific Conference on Computer Graphics and Applications (Cat. No.98EX208), 2002
When volume data is visualized by the ray casting method, the color value of each pixel in the image is obtained by composing the color contributions of the sample points that lie on the ray cast from the pixel point. In most ray tracing methods, including M.

Ray casting sparse level sets

Proceedings of the Digital Production Symposium on - DigiPro '12, 2012
This paper presents an interactive rendering method for sparse level sets. A GPU-CPU hybrid ray casting approach is developed to perform a surface extraction of a level set embedded in a signed distance field. The sparseness of the data structure is exploited to allow object-order empty-space skipping.

GPU ray casting of virtual globes

ACM SIGGRAPH 2010 Posters, 2010
Accurately rendering an ellipsoid is a fundamental problem for virtual globes in GIS and aerospace applications where the Earth's standard reference surface is non-spherical. The traditional approach of tessellating an ellipsoid into triangles and rendering via rasterization has several drawbacks [Miller and Gaskins 2009].

Ray casting for modeling solids

Computer Graphics and Image Processing, 1982
Abstract This paper presents ray casting as the methodological basis for a CAD/CAM solid modeling system. Solid objects are modeled by combining primitive solids, such as blocks and cylinders, using the set operators union, intersection, and difference. To visualize and analyze the composite solids modeled, virtual light rays are cast as probes.

Fast walkthroughs with image caches and ray casting

Computers & Graphics, 1999
We present an output-sensitive rendering algorithm for accelerating walkthroughs of large, densely occluded virtual environments using a multistage Image Based Rendering Pipeline. In the first stage, objects within a certain distance are rendered using the traditional graphics pipeline, whereas the remaining scene is rendered by a pixel-based approach ...

Exploiting temporal coherence in ray casted walkthroughs

Proceedings of the 19th Spring Conference on Computer Graphics, 2003
We present a technique that aims at exploiting temporal coherence of ray casted walkthroughs. Our goal is to reuse ray/object inter sections computed in the last frame of the walkthrough for acceleration of ray casting in the current frame. In particular we aim at eliminating the ray traversal and computing only a single ray/object intersection per ...

Adaptive perspective ray casting

Proceedings of the 1998 IEEE symposium on Volume visualization, 1998
We present a method to accurately and efficiently perform perspective volumetric ray casting of uniform regular datasets, called Exponential-Region (ER) Perspective. Unlike previous methods which undersample, oversample, or approximate the data, our method near uniformly samples the data throughout the viewing volume.
