Precursor Mineral Phases of Forming Mollusk Shell Nacre: A Study of Hydrated Samples
Mineral, organic phase, and water are the essential components in mollusk shell nacre formation. Their interplay is not well understood, because the hydrated material is difficult to observe at high resolution, under close to native conditions. Forming nacre is studied using environmental and cryo‐electron microscopy and hydrated ACC phases, together ...

Ray Tracing and Physical Optics for Geodesic and GRIN Lens Antennas
This thesis investigates the ray tracing (RT) and physical optics (PO) method for geodesic and gradient-index (GRIN) lens antennas in both far and near fields at millimeter-wave frequencies (from around 30 GHz up to 110 GHz). In particular, parallel-plate-waveguide (PPW) based GRIN lenses and geodesic H-plane horns are studied to realize high-gain ...

Multiple Twinning in Nacre and Aragonite
Electron backscatter diffraction map of a cluster of geologic aragonite, exhibiting single, double, and triple twins. The whole cluster is approximately 2 cm wide. Colors indicate crystal orientations, so that pixels where the a‐, b‐, and c‐axis is perpendicular to the image plane are green, red, and blue, respectively.

An adapted processing for solvent‐free argyrodite solid electrolyte films based on insights into degradation mechanisms of the widely used binder polytetrafluoroethylene is presented. By adapting the dry film processing, long‐term cycling in Si||NMC pouch cells is demonstrated over more than 1000 cycles with a capacity retention of more than 80%, and ...

Deformation and Degradation in 18650 Li‐Ion Cells Under Freeze‐Thaw Cycling
This study investigates the impact of freezethaw degradation of 18650 cells via combined electrochemical and x‐ray imaging studies. High‐resolution synchrotron X‐ray tomography reveals deformation of the jelly‐roll structure and delamination of electrode active materials in cells cycled at 1C and 4C. These structural changes are quantitatively assessed
