Molecular dynamics and Rayleigh–Benard convection

A number of recent molecular dynamic studies have shown that transient convection cells can occur in hard disk systems containing as few as 5000 particles. We extend these studies, with special attention to the role of the various algorithms used to impose thermal boundary conditions.

We report the observations from turbulent thermal Rayleigh-Benard convection experiment with a two-phase liquid-vapor binary mixture. Evaporation/condensation processes in a turbulent convection are accompanied by the formation of cloud like structures above the liquid-vapor interface.

The author considers rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection with modulated rotation speed. Galerkin truncation under realistic, i.e. experimentally realisable, boundary conditions is carried out. The threshold of convection can be raised or lowered depending on the Prandtl number and rotation speed.

The effects of boundary conditions on the linear stability of finite cell pure fluid Rayleigh-Benard convection are investigated via a variational formalism and a perturbative approach. Some general properties of the critical Rayleigh number, Rc, with respect to change of boundary conditions or system size are derived.
