The Rayleigh-Ritz method still competitive

open access: yesJournal of Computational and Applied Mathematics, 1994
Following his earlier work [Numer. Math. 54, 639-654 (1989; Zbl 0645.65027)], the author considers the computation of two-sided bounds for the eigenvalues of the one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with various potentials, using a finite element method with high-order B- splines.

New Interpolation Functions in Eigen-Frequency Analysis of Timoshenko Beams on Two-Parameter Elastic Soil

open access: yesEngineering Transactions, 1996
The aim of the paper is to study the dynamic behaviour, limited to the eigen-value problem, of Timoshenko beams on variable two-parameter elastic soil.

A study of the Numerical Convergence of Rayleigh-Ritz Method for the Free Vibrations of Cantilever Beam of Variable Cross-Section with Tip Mass

open access: yesEngineering Transactions, 1996
A numerical study on the convergence properties of the Rayleigh-Ritz method is presented, for the dynamic analysis of beams with continuously varying cross-section. The beam is assumed to be slender, the Euler-Bernoulli hypotheses are accepted, and some

Similarities of discrete and continuous Sturm-Liouville problems

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2007
In this paper we present a study on the analogous properties of discrete and continuous Sturm-Liouville problems arising in matrix analysis and differential equations, respectively.
