Oviposition behavior is not affected by ultraviolet light in a butterfly with sexually-dimorphic expression of a UV-sensitive opsin. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2023
Our study focuses on the evolution of sexual dimorphism of UV vision in Heliconius butterflies. Under naturalistic light conditions, we experimentally altered UV‐light availability using light filters to test the hypothesis that, in H. erato, UV vision is important for oviposition, a female‐specific behavior.

Nanocrystalline Flash Annealed Nickel Oxide for Large Area Perovskite Solar Cells. [PDF]

open access: yesAdv Sci (Weinh), 2023
The industrialization of perovskite solar cells requires selecting adequate materials and processes to make them economically viable and environmentally sustainable. Nanocrystalline nickel oxide produced through flash infrared annealing reduces the time, cost, energy, and the amount of solvents required to produce hole transport layers in perovskite ...

Torsion Effects Beyond the δ Bond and the Role of π Metal-Ligand Interactions. [PDF]

open access: yesAdv Sci (Weinh)
Recent research challenges established notions in bimetallic paddlewheel compounds. Contrary to prior findings, higher torsion results in shorter metal–metal distances, not longer. This anomaly, attributed to overlooked π metal‐ligand interactions, highlights the importance of the π conjugated nature of the equatorial ligands in the electronic ...

Tetrahedraphene: A Csp3‐centered 3D Molecular Nanographene Showing Aggregation‐Induced Emission

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 135, Issue 49, December 4, 2023., 2023
Supramolecular interactions in the solid state (X‐ray) and solution (mixtures of THF/H2O) control the photophysical properties! A singular 3D nanographene (Tetrahedraphene) shows a remarkable aggregation‐induced emission upon water addition changing from blue in solution to vivid yellow colour in the precipitated solid.

FINDeM: A CRISPR‐based, molecular method for rapid, inexpensive and field‐deployable organism detection

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 12, Page 3055-3067, December 2023., 2023
Abstract The field of ecology has undergone a molecular revolution, with researchers increasingly relying on DNA‐based methods for organism detection. Unfortunately, these techniques often require expensive equipment, dedicated laboratory spaces and specialized training in molecular and computational techniques; limitations that may exclude field ...

Candidate pathway association and genome‐wide association approaches reveal alternative genetic architectures of carotenoid content in cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus)

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences, Volume 11, Issue 6, November-December 2023., 2023
Abstract Premise The explosion of available genomic data poses significant opportunities and challenges for genome‐wide association studies. Current approaches via linear mixed models (LMM) are straightforward but prevent flexible assumptions of an a priori genomic architecture, while Bayesian sparse LMMs (BSLMMs) allow this flexibility. Complex traits,

Assessing long term effects of compost fertilization on soil fertility and nitrogen mineralization rate

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, Volume 186, Issue 2, Page 217-233, April 2023., 2023
Abstract Background Fertilization with organic waste compost can close the nutrient cycles between urban and rural environments. However, its effect on yield and soil fertility must be investigated. Aim This study investigated the long‐term effect of compost on soil nutrient and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) concentration, nutrient budgets, and ...
