A first-order phase transition at the random close packing of hard spheres

open access: yes, 2016
Randomly packing spheres of equal size into a container consistently results in a static configuration with a density of ~64%. The ubiquity of random close packing (RCP) rather than the optimal crystalline array at 74% begs the question of the physical ...

Reconstructing Three‐Dimensional Optical Anisotropy with Tomographic Müller‐Polarimetric Microscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tomographic Müller polarimetric microscopy is a novel imaging technique that resolves 3D birefringent properties of bulky samples, unveiling hierarchical nanostructures at microscopic resolution. Based on incoherent visible‐light polarimetry, it achieves experimental simplicity by eliminating phase measurements.

Super‐Heterostructures of Twisted Pd Nanoarrays Epitaxially Grown on Chiral Au Nanorods Boost Circularly Polarized Photocatalysis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Au‐Pd super‐heterostructures not only retard the damping of chiroptical response but also enantio‐selectively enhance photocatalysis, thanks to the chiral electromagnetic field and chiral hot electrons. Abstract Seed‐mediated growth provides an efficient way to produce chiral hybrid nanocrystals, mainly benefitting from the recent successful synthesis ...

Bioclimatic modelling in the holocene and in future warming scenarios in Arbutus unedo L. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Growing forests wildfires in Portugal are an increasing concern since forests in the Mediterranean region are vulnerable to recent global warming. Long-term negative effects are expected on the vegetation with the coming increasing drought.

Comparison of the immune response to vaccination with pigeon circovirus recombinant capsid protein (PiCV rCP) in pigeons uninfected and subclinically infected with PiCV

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Infections with immunosuppressive pigeon circovirus (PiCV) pose the most severe health problem to the global pigeon breeding. The vaccination with immunogenic PiCV recombinant capsid protein (PiCV rCP) is a potential tool for disease control.

36‐Channel Spin and Wavelength Co‐Multiplexed Metasurface Holography by Phase‐Gradient Inverse Design

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A single‐cell metasurface is designed to multiplex holographic images across both spin and wavelength channels using a single‐phase map. By employing inverse design and automatic differentiation, the metasurface achieves 36 channel multiplexing across the visible to near‐infrared spectrum.

Multispacecraft observations of the terrestrial bow shock and magnetopause during extreme solar wind disturbances [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2012
Three events are discussed from the declining phase of the last solar cycle when the magnetopause and/or the bow shock were observed unusually close to the Earth due to major interplanetary disturbances.

Study of Cronin effect and nuclear modification of strange particles in d-Au and Au-Au collisions at 200 GeV in PHENIX

open access: yes, 2004
Effects of strangeness on nuclear modification in d-Au and Au-Au collisions at 200 GeV are studied, in order to quantify the effects of quark content and mass.
