Novel Sewer Defect Prediction Leveraging Advanced Machine Learning (ML) Models

open access: yesWater Environment Research, Volume 98, Issue 3, March 2026.
An evaluation of four decision tree‐based machine learning models is conducted to predict infiltration and structural defects occurrences in sewer networks using pipe characteristics and locations. Utility‐specific models are developed for two Western Canada utilities showing pipe location and age, two of the key predictors of both defect types ...

Seasonal variation in wild pig (Sus scrofa) diet revealed by DNA metabarcoding

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 50, Issue 1, March 2026.
Using DNA metabarcoding of fecal samples, we investigated the diet of wild pigs at an extensive bottomland hardwood forest ecosystem within Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge in Southern Arkansas. We found that wild pig diet was highly diverse and included at least 74 plant families and 106 genera and 23 species of vertebrates.

Potential Impacts of Climate Interventions on Marine Ecosystems

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 64, Issue 1, March 2026.
Abstract Rising global temperatures pose significant risks to marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and fisheries. Recent comprehensive assessments suggest that large‐scale mitigation efforts to limit warming are falling short, and all feasible future climate projections, including those that represent optimistic emissions reductions, exceed the Paris ...

Meteorological to Agricultural Drought Transitions Compounded by Heat Waves in Historical and Future Climates

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Meteorological droughts (persistent precipitation deficits) often, but not always, transition into agricultural droughts (persistent soil moisture deficits). The intensity of agricultural drought, however, can vary for a given precipitation deficit due to a number of catalyzing co‐factors beyond precipitation such as atmospheric evaporative ...

Drought‐Driven Water Insecurity in an Emerging Indian Megacity: A Coupled Multi‐Agent Systems Approach for Policy Evaluation

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Developing regions face critical water security challenges driven by rapid urban growth, economic development, and climate change. In India, these issues are particularly evident in Pune, the country's 9th most populated city. It is evolving into a sprawling urban agglomeration expected to grow from 7 to 11 million residents by mid‐century ...
