2021Gymnosperm and angiosperm trees differ in the nature of their reaction wood produced following shoot bending for uplifting of the stem to its straight vertical position. In gymnosperm trees, the reaction wood is called compression wood that develops in the lower side of curved stem.

FTIR studies of the “wood”-isocyanate reaction
Journal of Molecular Structure, 1988Abstract FTIR spectroscopic studies have been carried out of the reaction of n-butyl isocyanate with whole wood and with isolated lignin and holocellulose components. The reaction produces a permanent carbamate derivative which imparts hydrophobic qualities to wood. Evidence is presented of allophanate formation under conditions of excess reagent.
