Coatings for fast breeder reactor components

open access: yesThin Solid Films, 1984
Abstract Several types of metallurgical coatings are used in the unique environments of the fast breeder reactor. Most of the coatings have been developed for tribological applications, but some also serve as corrosion barriers, diffusion barriers or radionuclide traps.

Photocatalytic Water Splitting on the Lunar Surface: Prospects for In Situ Resource Utilization

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Water has been found in craters on the moon nearby locations which are illuminated >80% of the time. Photocatalysis uses energy from sunlight to drive chemical reactions such as water splitting to produce oxygen and hydrogen. It is a scalable technology that requires lighter equipment and utilizes resources available on the moon. ABSTRACT The discovery

Measuring and Manipulating Density of States in Two‐Dimensional Materials With Electrochemical Capacitance

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
We report electrochemical quantum capacitance spectroscopy as an ambient, in situ probe for defect‐mediated electronic structure at 2D material interfaces. Using monolayer MoS2, the method resolves band edges and vacancy states, tracks sulfur‐vacancy evolution during hydrogen evolution, and links interfacial density‐of‐states changes to nearly ...

Energy Band Alignment and Electro‐Optical Behavior of Nearly Unstrained Monolayer MoS2 Heterostructures With GaN

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Large size (∼100 µm) monolayer MoS2 grown by LPI‐CVD on n‐GaN exhibit a high n‐type doping, very low strain, and a type‐I band alignment at MoS2/GaN interface. Photocurrent measurements under illumination with photon energies from ∼2 to ∼5 eV show superior electro‐optical performances of these MoS2/n‐GaN heterojunctions as compared to Ni/n‐GaN devices ...

Influence of neutron decay on nuclear reactor materials [version 1; peer review: 2 approved, 1 approved with reservations]

open access: yesNuclear Science and Technology Open Research
While many of the leading factors for material degradation in irradiated reactor components have been identified through past studies, spontaneous neutron decay within components is a factor absent in the literature.

Atomic Layer Deposition of Metallic Molybdenum Dioxide Thin Films Enabling High‐k Rutile Capacitors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
The first direct atomic layer deposition (ALD) process of molybdenum dioxide (MoO2) thin films is reported using molybdenum(II) acetate dimer (Mo2(OAc)4) and oxygen (O2) as precursors at 235°C–275°C. The films are crystalline, exceptionally pure, and conductive.

Influence of Carbon Nanoparticles on Electrically Induced Wear of Grease‐Lubricated Steels

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
When an electric current enters a pair of rubbing surfaces, enormous damage takes place. In this research, how such damage occurs in the presence of protective grease and the mitigation with added carbon nanoparticles, were investigated. It was discovered that those particles regulate transport and interfacial electrical stability of the grease ...

Multiphysics Continuous Shape Optimization of the TAP Reactor Components

open access: yesCoRR
The Transatomic Power (TAP) reactor has an unusual design for a molten salt reactor technology, building upon the foundation laid by the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE). This design introduces three key modifications to enhance efficiency and compactness: a revised fuel salt composition, an alternative moderator material, and moderator pins ...

Additive‐Manufactured, Multifunctional Bioreactor Technology for Dynamic Culture of 3D Bioprinted Tissue Models

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
We introduce an additively manufactured bioreactor with a perfusion flow system and integrated temperature and pH sensors for skeletal muscle tissue biofabrication. The bioreactor's performance was evaluated by assessing the viability, spreading of the myoblast cells in a printed scaffold, and contraction of the isolated murine musculi interossei ...
