Biogas Purification by Methane and Acetate Manufacturing

open access: yesGCB Bioenergy, Volume 17, Issue 1, January 2025.
ABSTRACT Wastewater treatment plants have two persistent financial and energetic drains, the carbon dioxide content of biogas, which limits its commercial sale, and the presence of trace organics in the wastewater effluent, which damages the aquatic ecosystem, like the Great Barrier Reef. Biogas is a renewable methane resource that is underutilized due

Upgrading of Biogas via Combined Removal of Impurities Using Tailor‐Made Adsorbent Materials in a Fixed‐Bed Adsorption Column

open access: yesInternational Journal of Energy Research, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Raw biogas (40%–75% CH4) faces challenges in its adoption due to its low energy density and unpleasant odor in lighting and cooking applications. The objective of this study was to upgrade biogas using low‐cost adsorbent materials through column adsorption.

In‐situ biological biogas upgrading using upflow anaerobic polyfoam bioreactor: Operational and biological aspects

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, Volume 121, Issue 11, Page 3471-3483, November 2024.
High Rate anaerobic polyfoam‐based bioreactor (UAPB) for in ‐situ biogas upgrading. Abstract A high rate upflow anaerobic polyfoam‐based bioreactor (UAPB) was developed for lab‐scale in‐situ biogas upgrading by H2 injection. The reactor, with a volume of 440 mL, was fed with synthetic wastewater at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 3.5 g COD/L·day and a

Assessment of active methanogenic archaea in a methanol-fed upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Methanogenic archaea enrichment of a granular sludge was undertaken in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor fed with methanol in order to enrich methylotrophic and hydrogenotrophic methanogenic populations.

Biofilm characterization and dynamic simulation of advanced rope media reactor for the treatment of primary effluent

open access: yesWater Environment Research, Volume 96, Issue 11, November 2024.
This study aimed to characterize and model the biofilm of a specific rope‐type fixed media, removing carbon and total nitrogen. The presented results have shown that the calibrated BFFR model can predict effluent ammonium and dissolved oxygen for the bench‐scale and pilot‐scale reactors.

Wastewater treatment risks and challenges for public health and the environment during the Covid‐19 pandemic: a review

open access: yesJournal of Chemical Technology &Biotechnology, Volume 99, Issue 10, Page 2119-2128, October 2024.
Abstract During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), viral transport, fate, disinfection and environmental release in wastewater treatment plants have been issues of high importance for overall management.
