Noise-limited reading of bar codes

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 1997
The ubiquitous supermarket checkout scanner is a well-engineered and effective device. Existing scanners rely on simple and low-cost signal processing to interpret bar-code signals, which imposes restrictions on the system noise power that they can tolerate.

Chronic Noise Exposure and Reading Deficits

Environment and Behavior, 1997
First- and second-grade schoolchildren chronically exposed to aircraft noise have significant deficits in reading as indexed by a standardized reading test administered under quiet conditions. These findings indicate that the harmful effects of noise are related to chronic exposure rather than interference effects during the testing session itself. We

Noise in gallium arsenide avalanche Read diodes

IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, 1976
The noise and signal properties of Read-type avalanche diodes under large-signal levels are examined. In contrast to most other previous theories, we include the saturation current in the equations rigorously from the beginning. We find that the noise performance is a strong function of the saturation current such that high saturation currents lead to ...

Background noise and lip-reading ability

British Journal of Audiology, 1989
The main aim of this pilot experiment was to determine whether background noise affects the lip-reading ability of normally hearing people. Ten university students took part in a lip-reading test presented both in the quiet and with two types of competing noise.

Effects of noise type, noise intensity, and illumination intensity on reading performance

Applied Acoustics, 2017
Abstract This study empirically investigated the effects of noise type, noise intensity, and illumination intensity on reading performance. Three levels of noise types: factory noise, classical music, and pop with lyrics; three levels of noise intensity: 45 dBA, 65 dBA, and 85 dBA; and three levels of illumination intensity: 200 lx, 600 lx, and 1000 ...

Read-noise considerations in cryoelectric memory systems

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 1969
Several sources of deterministic read noise in cryo-electric memories are discussed. Write noise and random thermal noise are not included. Noise on a single plane is first considered. Inductively coupled in-mode noise can be minimized by crossing lines at right angles and maintaining maximum distance between parallel segments of drive and sense lines.
