Abstract I have argued that the choices and preferences of societies can be evaluated on the basis of principles of rational choice. In this chapter, I propose a theory of “self-grounded” rational choice, called the “needs-and-values” theory. I suggest that it is the appropriate theory to use in developing the society-centered theory.
