In 1989, Brendan Bradshaw, reviewing 'the mainstream tradition of Irish historical scholarship as it has developed since the 1930s' suggested that tradition had proved itself inadequate.' It had been unable to deal with either the 'catastrophic dimension of Irish history' or 'the Irish nationalist tradition'.
