Biochemical Localisation of the 5-HT2A(serotonin) Receptor in Rat Skeletal Muscle
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1999The 5-HT2A receptor was recently shown to localise morphologically to the transverse tubules (TT) in rat foetal myoblasts. Receptor activation enhanced the expression of genes involved in myogenesis, and its TT localisation has led to the suggestion that it may participate in excitation-contraction coupling.

Functional Selectivity in Serotonin Receptor 2A (5-HT2A) Endocytosis, Recycling, and Phosphorylation
Molecular Pharmacology, 2013G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling is modulated by endocytosis and endosomal sorting of receptors between degradation and recycling. Differential regulation of these processes by endogenous ligands and synthetic drugs is a poorly understood area of GPCR signaling.

The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, 2004
Gene expression studies have suggested that dopamine (DA) depletion increases the sensitivity of striatal direct pathway neurons to the effects of serotonin (5-HT) via the 5-HT(2) receptor. The present study examined the possible influence(s) of 5-HT(2A) or 5-HT(2C) receptor-mediated signaling locally within the striatum on motor behavior triggered by ...

No association between bipolar affective disorder and a serotonin receptor (5-HT2A) polymorphism
Psychiatry Research, 1997The serotonergic system is implicated in the pathogenesis of affective disorders. In particular, the role of the postsynaptic 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) type 2 receptor (5-HT2) has been documented by several studies. The 5-HT2A receptor gene located on chromosome 13 (13q14-21) can be considered a candidate gene for bipolar affective disorder (BPAD)

Strategies for mapping the binding site of the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor
2002Publisher Summary The serotonin 5-HT2A receptor is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily for which studies have identified key interactions in the ligand–receptor complexes. To overcome the limitations inherent in both site-directed mutagenesis and computational modeling, mutational experiments and computational techniques ...

Enhanced platelet serotonin 5-HT2A receptor binding in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa
European Neuropsychopharmacology, 1999Some evidence exists to suggest that serotonin 5-HT2A receptor function is altered in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. In order to further investigate the 5-HT2A receptor in eating disorders, platelet [3H]lysergic acid diethylamide ([3H]LSD) binding was studied in ten patients with anorexia nervosa, 23 patients with bulimia nervosa and 33 healthy ...

Generation of anti-peptide antibodies against serotonin 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptors
Journal of Neuroscience Methods, 1997Anti-peptide antibodies were generated against several 13-17 amino acid regions of rat serotonin 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptors. Peptides containing terminal cysteine residues were conjugated to bovine serum albumin (BSA) and ovalbumin (OVA) with the cross-linking reagent sulfo-SMCC (sulfosuccinimidyl 4-(N-maleimidomethyl) cyclohexane-1-carboxylate). Both

Chronic thyroxine treatment activates the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor in the mouse brain
Neuroscience Letters, 2007Chronic thyroxine administration (2.0 mg/l, 60 days) significantly increases the 5-HT2A serotonin receptor gene mRNA level in the frontal cortex and augments the frequency of head twitches induced by the receptor agonist DOI (1.0 mg/kg, i.p.) in AKR mice. The result indicates thyroid hormones involvement in 5-HT2A receptor regulation in adult brain.

Targeting Serotonin 5-HT2A Receptors to Better Treat Schizophrenia: Rationale and Current Approaches
CNS Drugs, 2020Schizophrenia is a major mental illness associated with profound disability. Current treatments for schizophrenia (antipsychotics) all have a similar mechanism of action and are primarily dopamine type 2 receptor (D2R) antagonists. Antipsychotics are not fully effective for the majority of schizophrenia patients, suggesting the need for alternative ...

To investigate (i) the association between four serotonergic polymorphisms (A-1438G and T102C of the 5-HT2A receptor gene, and 5-HTT VNTR and 5-HTTLPR of the 5-HT transporter gene) and schizophrenia and (ii) the potential interaction of those polymorphisms in the development of schizophrenia.227 outpatients with schizophrenia (DSM-IV criteria) and 420 ...
