Identification of transferrin receptors in reticulocytes

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1977
Experiments were performed to obtain definitive evidence for the presence of membrane receptors for transferrin on reticulocytes. Rabbit reticulocytes were incubated with 125I-labelled rabbit transferrin. The transferrin taken up by the cells was solubilized using the non-ionic detergent, Teric 12A9 (polyoxyethylene (n=9) dodecyl alcohol).

Transferrin receptor in oral tumors

International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1994
The transferrin receptor (TfR) appears in vigorously proliferating cells. We did an immunohistochemical study of TfR in oral tissues and a quantitative analysis by flow cytometry of TfR in a cancer cell line after an anticancer drug treatment. TfR was found in the parabasal and basal layers of the normal epithelium, but rarely in benign tumors ...

Reticulocyte membrane transferrin receptors

Canadian Journal of Biochemistry, 1980
A membrane protein with specific transferrin binding activity has been isolated from rabbit reticulocytes. The isolation procedure involved the immunoprecipitation by antibody to transferrin of transferring–receptor complexes from reticulocyte membrane proteins which had been solubilized with nonionic detergent.

Immunostaining of transferrin and transferrin receptor in human seminiferous tubules

Fertility and Sterility, 1986
Transferrin (TF) and transferrin receptor (TFr) were studied in human testicular biopsy specimens with the use of immunostaining techniques. A polyclonal antibody to human TF (obtained in goat), a murine monoclonal antibody (B3/25) to human TFr, and antisera antigoat IgG and antimouse IgG, both labeled with peroxidase, were used.

Transferrin receptors in injured brain

Acta Neuropathologica, 1990
Recent studies have demonstrated the presence of transferrin receptors (Tf-R) in the central nervous system. The present study of Wistar rats with experimentally induced brain injuries, using immunohistochemistry at the light microscopy level, demonstrated the presence of Tf-R in regenerated endothelial cells, reactive astrocytes and in other cells ...

The Measurement of Serum Transferrin Receptor

The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1999
The concentration of the soluble fragment of transferrin receptor in serum is an important new hematological parameter. Clinical and laboratory studies have shown that this serum form of the receptor reflects the total body mass of cellular transferrin receptor, 80% of which is contained in the erythroid marrow.

Internalization efficiency of the transferrin receptor

Experimental Cell Research, 1992
Quantitative ultrastructural and biochemical methods have allowed us to obtain a coherent set of data on the internalization efficiency of the transferrin receptor (TfR). In confluent cell cultures we find that (1) the initial internalization rate of transferrin is approximately 10% per minute, and (2) around 10% of cell-surface TfRs are present in ...

The Transferrin Receptor and the Release of Iron from Transferrin

1994
In a classic report detailing the role of transferrin in providing iron to human reticulocytes, Jand1 and coworkers noted that uptake of transferrin-borne iron was saturable as the concentration of transferrin in the culture medium increased, and that uptake was essentially abolished if cells were first exposed to trypsin.

Regulation of transferrin receptor 2 protein levels by transferrin

Blood, 2004
AbstractTransferrin receptor 2 (TfR2) plays a critical role in iron homeostasis because patients carrying disabling mutations in the TFR2 gene suffer from hemochromatosis. In this study, iron-responsive regulation of TfR2 at the protein level was examined in vitro and in vivo.

Transferrin and the Transferrin Receptor: Of Magic Bullets and Other Concerns

Inflammation & Allergy-Drug Targets, 2008
Transferrin (Trf) is a highly conserved serum glycoprotein mostly known for its iron transport capacity. As iron is an indispensable nutrient for cell division, Trf and its receptor have long been used as targets of pharmacological intervention mostly for cancer therapy and for diagnosis in inflammation.
