Tunable Synthetic Hydrogel Modulates Hepatic Lineage Specification of Human Liver Organoid

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, a synthetic hydrogel is reported that supports the formation of hiPSC‐derived human liver organoids (HLOs). Hepatic lineage specification can be modulated via conjugation of RGD peptide to hydrogel: RGD‐conjugated hydrogels promote cholangiocyte differentiation, whereas RGD‐free hydrogels favor hepatocyte commitment of HLO cells.

Bicontinuous Microarchitected Scaffolds Provide Topographic Cues That Govern Neuronal Behavior and Maturation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A scalable biomimetic platform transforms bioinert poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate into neuroinstructive matrices via integrating solvent transfer‐induced phase separation, microfluidics, and 3D bioprinting. Bicontinuous, hyperbolically curved microporous networks embedded within a fibrous construct elicit rapid adhesion, robust proliferation, and ...

Regime-dependent recession forecasts and the 2001 recession [PDF]

open access: yes
Business recessions are notoriously hard to predict accurately, hence the quip that economists have predicted eight of the last five recessions. This article derives a six-month-ahead recession signal that reduces the number of false signals outside of ...

Self‐Assembled Heterosymmetric Structure with Tunable Polarization Optics for Reversible Matrix Encryption

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Sustainable films with heterosymmetric structures, harmoniously integrating symmetry and asymmetry, are fabricated using cellulose nanocrystals and hydrophilic nanolignin via evaporation‐induced self‐assembly, which exhibit excellent multiple polarization optical properties.

An Artificial Neural Network for Prediction of Front Slope Recession in Berm Breakwater

open access: yesInternational Journal of Coastal and Offshore Engineering, 2018
Berm breakwaters are used as protective structures against the wave attack where larger quarry materials as armor stone is scarce, or large quarry materials are available but using berm breakwater lowers the costs considerably.

Value in the empty city: Findings from New Zealand’s Urban Dream Brokerage

open access: yesUrban Transcripts, 2020
Between 2013–2018, the Urban Dream Brokerage ran as an urban revitalisation platform, commissioned by four distinct New Zealand municipalities. The model: during a period of economic recession and commercial vacancy, proposals from artists and non-profit

The Low-Wage Recovery and Growing Inequality [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This report updates NELP's previous analyses of job loss and job growth trends during and after the Great Recession. We find that:1. During the recession, employment losses occurred throughout the economy, but were concentrated in mid-wage occupations ...
