Adjuvant therapy following oesophagectomy for adenocarcinoma in patients with a positive resection margin

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), Volume 107, Issue 13, Page 1801-1810, December 2020., 2020
In UK practice, surgical resection margin status is often used to stratify patients for receipt of adjuvant treatment. This cohort study suggested both an overall and recurrence‐free survival benefit following adjuvant therapy in patients with positive margins, who had undergone neoadjuvant chemotherapy and resectional surgery for oesophageal ...

Local recurrence after local excision of early rectal cancer: a meta‐analysis of completion TME, adjuvant (chemo)radiation, or no additional treatment

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), Volume 107, Issue 13, Page 1719-1730, December 2020., 2020
This meta‐analysis showed that patients who undergo no additional treatment after local excision of pT1–2 rectal cancer have a high risk of local recurrence, especially those with high‐risk pT1 and pT2 lesions. The risk of local recurrence after adjuvant (chemo)radiotherapy for high‐risk pT1 tumours seems to be similar to that after completion TME. For

Incidence and recurrence rate of sigmoid diverticulitis in patients requiring admission to hospital in Iceland from 1985 to 2014: nationwide population‐based register study

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1217-1226, December 2020., 2020
Has there been an epidemic of sigmoid diverticulitis in Iceland, with the highest incidence around 1995? Changes in the prevalence of smoking, differences in diagnostic methods and improved health in older generations are possible causes of the rise and fall in incidence of sigmoid diverticulitis.

Factors associated with metachronous metastases and survival in locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1172-1179, December 2020., 2020
Surgery for locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer can achieve good survival outcomes. Some histopathological features significantly increase the number of metachronous metastases and shorten survival. Presentation with a synchronous metastasis that is treated successfully significantly increases the number of metachronous metastases and shortens

C‐reactive protein : albumin ratio in patients with resectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1146-1152, December 2020., 2020
This study showed that a high C‐reactive protein : albumin ratio (CAR) is an independent predictor of poor recurrence‐free survival in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). The results also suggest that patients with ICC with a high CAR had a more aggressive tumour behaviour, including a larger tumour size, higher frequency of ...

Hemithyroidectomy versus total thyroidectomy for well differentiated T1–2 N0 thyroid cancer: systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 987-994, December 2020., 2020
This systematic review and meta‐analysis showed similar recurrence rates after hemithyroidectomy for selected patients with well differentiated T1–2 N0 thyroid cancer to those in patients who had a total thyroidectomy with or without radioactive iodine treatment, with lower reported rates of treatment‐related complications.
