Factors associated with metachronous metastases and survival in locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1172-1179, December 2020., 2020
Surgery for locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer can achieve good survival outcomes. Some histopathological features significantly increase the number of metachronous metastases and shorten survival. Presentation with a synchronous metastasis that is treated successfully significantly increases the number of metachronous metastases and shortens

C‐reactive protein : albumin ratio in patients with resectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 1146-1152, December 2020., 2020
This study showed that a high C‐reactive protein : albumin ratio (CAR) is an independent predictor of poor recurrence‐free survival in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). The results also suggest that patients with ICC with a high CAR had a more aggressive tumour behaviour, including a larger tumour size, higher frequency of ...

Hemithyroidectomy versus total thyroidectomy for well differentiated T1–2 N0 thyroid cancer: systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 6, Page 987-994, December 2020., 2020
This systematic review and meta‐analysis showed similar recurrence rates after hemithyroidectomy for selected patients with well differentiated T1–2 N0 thyroid cancer to those in patients who had a total thyroidectomy with or without radioactive iodine treatment, with lower reported rates of treatment‐related complications.

Meta‐analysis of the impact of postoperative infective complications on oncological outcomes in colorectal cancer surgery

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 5, Page 737-747, October 2020., 2020
Postoperative infective complications have significant negative effects on oncological outcomes in colorectal cancer. Anastomotic leakage has a negative effect on every measured outcome. New registries should include oncological outcomes and complications to facilitate future research and optimize outcomes.

Early operative management in patients with adhesive small bowel obstruction: population‐based cost analysis

open access: yesBJS Open, Volume 4, Issue 5, Page 914-923, October 2020., 2020
This population‐based cost–utility analysis compared early operative management (EOM) for adhesive small bowel obstruction (SBO) to the current standard of care of a trial of non‐operative management. Although EOM was more costly, it was associated with a significantly lower risk of recurrence and reduced exposure to the morbidity and costs associated ...

Locoregional recurrences after transanal total mesorectal excision of rectal cancer during implementation

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), Volume 107, Issue 9, Page 1211-1220, August 2020., 2020
During the learning curve, the transanal total mesorectal excision procedure is associated with a high multifocal local recurrence rate, which appears to be related to suboptimal execution rather than the technique, and necessitates prolonged proctoring, optimization of the technique avoiding spillage, participation in controlled clinical trials with ...
