Heuristic approach to handwritten numeral recognition

Pattern Recognition, 1986
Abstract An efficient and reliable heuristic method to recognize handwritten numerals is discussed. The numerals are written in a completely random manner such as can be generated and still recognized by humans. The method is designed to read the worst written numerals, where structural differences among numerals are investigated and the extracted ...

Extended Knowledge, the Recognition Heuristic, and Epistemic Injustice

open access: yes, 2018
We argue that the interaction of biased media coverage and widespread employment of the recognition heuristic can produce epistemic injustices. First, we explain the recognition heuristic as studied by Gerd Gigerenzer and colleagues, highlighting how ...

Heuristics for Apnea Episodes Recognition

2015
The Sleep Apnea is a respiratory disorder that affects a very significant number of patients, with different ages. One of the main consequences of suffering from apneas is the increase in the risk of stroke onsets. This study is concerned with an automatic identification of apnea episodes using a single triaxial accelerometer placed on the center of ...

Criterion knowledge: A moderator of using the recognition heuristic?

Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, 2009
AbstractThe recognition heuristic (RH) claims that people base inferences on recognition only. This has been questioned by several studies which found that additional knowledge was influential. However, in some of these studies, participants' additional knowledge might have encompassed criterion knowledge thus rendering any inferential strategy ...

A heuristic algorithm for the recognition of printed Chinese characters

IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, 1995
A heuristic algorithm for the recognition of printed Chinese characters is presented. Preprocessing consists of identifying individual straight line primitive strokes of a Chinese character, and then identifying the sequence of occurrence of these primitive strokes in the course of two orthogonal and one diagonal scans.

Malware target recognition via static heuristics

Computers & Security, 2012
Organizations increasingly rely on the confidentiality, integrity and availability of their information and communications technologies to conduct effective business operations while maintaining their competitive edge. Exploitation of these networks via the introduction of undetected malware ultimately degrades their competitive edge, while taking ...

Conclusiveness and heuristics in visual recognition

Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis, 2014
In this paper the main ideas underlying a discrete geometric approach to visual recognition are summarized and the results obtained are described on a meaningful level. Some considerations on the role of heuristics and evidence-based methods in the recognition of visual images follow.
