Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is responsible for chickenpox. Like all herpes viruses, after primary infection it enters into latency and can be reactivated afterwards. Many forms of symptomatic reactivation of VZV exist including acute retinal necrosis (ARN), an ophthalmic emergency which can lead to blindness.
