A Treatise on the Taxonomy of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

open access: yesIEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society
This work presents a comprehensive taxonomy of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) across its many variants in a systematically-structured form. The taxonomy encapsulates the different RIS categories based on the RIS components, channel estimation

Design and validation of scalable reconfigurable intelligent surfaces

open access: yesComputer Networks
In this paper, we share our experience in designing, prototyping, and empirically characterizing RF Switch-based Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS). Our RIS design consists of arrays of patch antennas, delay lines, and programmable radio-frequency (RF) switches, enabling 3D beamforming passively, without active RF components.

TRIM: Simultaneous Thermometry, Ranging, and Imaging via a Monolithic Metalens

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT While metasurfaces offer a pathway beyond the discrete architectures of conventional LWIR systems, physically fusing high‐precision thermometry and passive ranging onto a single metalens remains a formidable challenge. Here, we demonstrate a monolithic, dual‐focus metalens capable of simultaneous multidimensional sensing.

Performance Characterization of Continuous Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

open access: yesICC 2025 - IEEE International Conference on Communications
We consider a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) that can implement a phase rotation continuously over the whole surface rather than via a finite number of discrete elements. Such an RIS can be considered a design for future systems where advances in metamaterials make such an implementation feasible or as the limiting case where the number of ...

A Multimodal Magnetically Driven Soft Robot With Integrated Actuation‐Sensing Based on Photothermal Reprogramming Technology

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work reports a thermally safe, photothermally reprogrammable magnetic soft robot with its reprogramming temperature tuned to ∼39.5°C for biocompatibility. It achieves multimodal locomotion (max speed of 1.8 BL/s) and integrates liquid‐metal capacitive sensing to monitor self‐motion and detect environmental changes in simulated gastric environments,

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Enabled Downlink NOMA

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) bring great potential to the advancement of 6G and beyond wireless communication technologies. RISs introduce a great degree of flexibility, allowing some sort of virtual control over the wireless channel.

Photonic‐Enabled Energy‐Efficient Transparent Neuromorphic Computing Devices: A Review

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Transparent photonic neuromorphic computing devices merge optics and brain‐inspired computing to overcome von Neumann bottlenecks with ultrafast, low‐energy processing. By exploiting transparent oxides, 2D materials, phase‐change materials, and hybrid heterostructures, these platforms enable photonic synapses, memory, and logic for see‐through edge ...
